What's the general opinion of using a silicone valve cover gasket? |

Mine has been on for almost 10 years, seal it down on one side only so you can get the covers off. no leaks so far and it both have been on and off a few times. |

+ a lot. Solved my weeping problems from up there, and the side gasket as well. |

I had a silicon gasket, but since I tend to tighten the valve cover knobs too much, the thing would squish out of position and I was always fighting leaks. I ended-up making one from a sheet of high temperature 1/8" rubber/cork-looking stuff from a parts store. Not that I care, but it looks a bit more original than the silicon. With the valve cover off, I made a paper template that allowed me to take advantage of the whole surface so I could beef-up the amount of gasket in contact with the head. It has proven to be a lot more stable and stays in position no matter how hard I torque down the valve cover. As I recall, the material was about $10. Here is the gasket material that I used: Fel-Pro - Gasket Materials. Part #: 3019. UPC: 84113855658. Cork-Rubber 1/8" (10" x 26") Sheet. Recommended for Use on Valve Cover & Oil Pan Gasket Applications Good luck. Safety? Fast? Scott Ashworth - '54 TF |

Scott, Just courious,,,, How can it "squish out of position" if it was properly glued to the block???? SPW |

The pressure on the cover pushed the gasket out from under the valve cover lip toward the outsides. Then after a point it became unattached from the head in places. Most certainly a case of operator error with the amount of pressure I must have been applying. I used a silicon gasket for a long time but am having better success with the one I made. SRA |

I include full instructions with my MGT Roadster Gaskets, which have been very successful in curing topside T-series leaks (as the unsolicited testimonials above prove). I have just received another 100 sets, and am happy to provide them. See mgtrepair.net for ordering instructions. Tom Lange MGT Repair |
