MG TD TF 1500 - SILVER STREAK GREY PAINT-GR25

Hi all

I am struggling to find a supplier for Silver Streak Grey paint BMC code GR25 in a Aerosol can.

Can anyone suggest an outlet were this paint colour can be purchased off the shelf?

Nope you'll have to have it mixed. The factory bought their paint by the drum. As batch numbers changed so did the formulaes vary. Good news... Any competent auto paint store should be able to color match a panel from your car and then put it to an aerosol. But it won't be cheap. I'd suggest you get a quart or two mixed then you can have it transferred to a can when needed. Better yet buy a door jam gun so you can vary the flow rates and volume. You'll have a much better chance of finding a pattern to match the existing topcoat. Metallics take a great deal of finesse to spray as touch ups. Results rarely are satisfactory as the metal in the paint relies on air pressure, flash over, humidity considerations etc. I have an SSG car to paint soon as well but it will be a total respray. Good luck

Try Halfords. They mixed up a small bottle of red for my TF a couple of weeks ago for less than £10. An aerosol would have cost the same but I wanted a small brush to touch in a stone chip.

I am fairly sure that HMG paint would be able to supply this colour as an aerosol or as a tin. Craftmaster would probably be able to supply just a tin as I don't think they do aerosols. I am assuming that you don't have a reference sample. Are you matching up to something or is it just a speculative purchase to evaluate the colour?

Hi

Yes I am evaluating the colour at the moment, can't find a swatch sample anywhere for this colour.

I think I will give HMG Manchester a try.

Thanks.

John.

I have a swatch sample, and my car was painted in that colour or a variant thereof when I got it (not original as it was black when new). It looks a bit too much like grey primer to me!

Can't resist saying that mine was painted in Brolite Shadow Grey Iridescent when I got it (a metallic colour) and looked absolutely marvellous. Stupidly I changed it to Black Cherry a few years later when I rebuilt it.

It's behind the old bomb in the photo. Photo is scanned from a slide, so so doesn't really do it justice.

A short while ago I did a complete salvage/restoration of a '53TD. The original color that showed up under a number of sections was Silver Streak Gray. It was one of a group built around New Years 1952 that show up as having left the works as SSG. One of the striking things about the original paint was that it had a metallic appearance with a hint of green. Bud

I bought an aerosol of GR25 from Leonard Brooks car paints based in Essex, easy to deal with over phone can arrived in a couple of days, only base coat.

Unfotunatly my 1953 TD had all its ssg paint stripped many years ago and despite visiting shows with a swatch I have been unable to compare it to another car.

Nice colour and seems to sort of match some old 40 year photos.

Here's an image of the side of the fuel tank showing the original SSG paint. Many factors affect the colors that you see in the image, I think the greenish tinge shows up. Bud

That looks very similar to birch grey (TF) Bud.
Is that a TD tank?

Matthew.

M Magilton

Yes, that's a tank from the '53TD.
