MG TD TF 1500 - Skyhook Tranny Question

I want to remove the engine from my TD with the Skyhook Datsun transmission attached.

1. Is it possible?

2. Will I need to remove the gear shift lever?

3. Can I remove the gear shift lever with the tunnel in place?

4. If I have to remove the tunnel do I still need to remove the gear shift lever.

5. If I remove the tunnel I can separate the transmission but I'd rather not.

Any experience out there would be helpful.

Thanks,
Mort

Mort, I've done it on a TF and MGB, both times the transmission cover and the gear shift lever came out. On the TF it was easier to remove the whole remote, on the MGB just the lever. PJ

PAUL,
WAS THAT WITH A SKYHOOK 5 SPEED in both cars ????

Mort,
I just removed my engine without the trannie,,
but I did remove the tunnel to get to the bolts,,, with a jack under the trannie,, I think I might pull the trannie back when I get to reinstalling the motor,,

Removing the gear shift lever on the Datsun is pretty easy. Nothing at all like the Stock gear box. Single bolt. You must remove it to pull it with the engine.

Mort -
No, remove the transmission. This is the Datsun transmission. The problem is getting the big rubber block bolted to the rear of the transmission high enough to clear the crossmember. When you raise the transmission you are putting the engine at the wrong angle to clear the front suspension and move the powertrain forward. The rubber block is held by one stud bolted thru the weldment of the rear of the transmission and is difficult to get to with the transmission in the car. Removal of the transmission from the top is less o0f a hassle and you do not need to remove the floor boards.

No Steve, sorry, they were both stock transmissions. I should have indicated that. Even so, I see no way to pull it all at least without removing the stick while leaving the toe board in. PJ

Mort -- I have removed and installed the engine with datsun tranny attached and not attached. I found it much easier with tranny attached. LaVerne is right in that the gearshift lever is easily removed by removing the bolt. It's will still be wedged in but you'll be able to pop it out.

John,
I have removed many of the peripheral parts including the tunnel. I don't see how you were able to do it. Jan seems right above. I can not lift the rear mount over the cross member before the bell housing hits the firewall. Are you working with a TD?
Thanks,
Mort

John has a TF Mort, If anything it is worse to remove and replace in a TF. If you don't want to tr and remove the tranny mount from the transmission, then I would recommend that you get the toe board loose. You do not have to remove it but you will need to be able to tilt it out of the way for clearance.

Thank you all,
I separated them. Engine out. Tranny in.

Mort,
Interesting that you have the hoist coming in from the side of the car??

Steve,
I have no room in front of the car to back up the hoist. By coming from the side I had room to swing the engine to the front and clear the car.
