MG TD TF 1500 - Sliding hub locating balls

What is the best way to peen the sliding hub locating balls into the hub? Any videos or photos out there?

Thanks

A two person job. Use an electricians bolster, about 1/2" wide and a hammer. A sharp tap or gentle whack does it. Really simple to do and quick. Cheers

Thanks Peter. Had to look up a bolster. :-)

Tim, here is my method. The rod and hose clamps hold the balls down while the center punching (lightly!) is done. A one man job and pretty easy.

I agree with Hugh...simple and easy ONCE you get the balls in place!

All,

The two punch marks method is good, however if you punch the holes before fitting the ball you don't need the hose clamps, here is the method:
1/ Use a centre punch to make two pop marks 180 ° apart and near the side of the hole.
2/ Fit the spring into the hole.
3/ Place the ball on the hole and use a soft rod and a hammer to force it in the hole. once once the ball is in place it will stay there.

P.S. I learned of this method from an highly appreciated member of this BBS who is no longer with us.

I tried one of the two methods that Horst suggests using a clamp and even with two people, one maneuvering the clamp while the other steadied the assembly, it simply wouldn't work. The rod and clamp Hugh suggests sounds like a good idea. With two people though the method that was recommended to me and that I used makes the job a doddle. No fiddling about with additional kit. Each ball takes just a few seconds to secure. Used this approach successfully on two gearboxes now. Cheers

Hugh, your method worked like a charm.
