MG TD TF 1500 - Soak Throw Out Bearing in Oil?

I've never done this, but recently heard of someone who was told to do so by an old-time mechanic.

Any thoughts, pro or con?

Not the throw out bearing...but the pilot bushing...yes.

Seems very odd to me - the TOB.

The pilot bush in the hole in back of crank/flywheel yes, albeit that can be accomplished by putting on thumb, filling with oil and pushing other thumb on top until oil oozes out. But not a throwout bearing...

Is the "release bearing" the TOB or spigot/pilot bush?

This may be a terminology issue...

That's It!!....Tom
The "release bearing" is the TOB....(never saw that acronym).

The spigot/pilot bush is in the end of the Crank...and supports the Pilot Shaft/1st Motion Shaft.

The TOB is made of heat sintered carbon, you could soak it for a year and it would make no difference.
In the UK in the 50's you could buy just the carbon, you heated the carrier and the worn one fell out and you dropped in the new one.

As I said in my very first post, I have never heard of such a process! I agree, it is pointless.

Soak it in oil! Many Peugeot cars had an oil tube to lubricate it during General Maintenance
Len Fanelli

Bad idea. It won't absorb any oil, and if it did it would end up on the clutch disc.

27 Peugeot 403 cars, always oiled them twice a year, never had oil on the clutch!

Very strange. I will have to ask my car mechanic pal in France just what that is all about - if I can work out how to ask him in Catalan French!

I figure the block gets hot enough to burn off any oil on its surface, so there would be no point.

Len is right the early Peugeot 403 had an oil pipe which lead to the thrust bearing. This was removed in later models. You can see this pipe in the image attached.

The black spatter everywhere tells its own story. They dropped it for a good reason.

For J Scragg - I did put out all the other distributor detail from Chip Old that I had. They can be found in the TD-TF 2016 archives under the heading 'More TD/c parts requested'. Sorry to go off-topic.

RA,

Thanks for the reminder, as I was away from home, I missed them.
