MG TD TF 1500 - Some Notes on the Directional Switch
My 52 did not have directionals. Some PO had butchered the fenders and added lights. I plugged them up. (Well my daughter say I did a crappy job and she had to re-do it) I had intended to use a period, but non-MG switch on my directionals. The one I have (had) is the stalk type with a neat little amber bulb on the end of the stalk the flashes in synchronism with the flasher. Alas it seems to have joined the missing. After 4 years of looking its gone. So I decided on an MG type switch. I kept waiting for one to show up on eBay. The few that did were non-functioning. Some reading of the Archive left me with severe doubt about the Moss (made in China?) replacement. I ran across a comment about Holden (UK) (www.holden.co.uk)having them. I went to the web site and it stated it was a Lucas switch. It stated it was made in England. It also stated it was out of stock. There was a nice little button to push, which purported to notify you if it was back in stock. I checked it. About 1 month later this nice email came saying it was back in stock. I ordered. A day or so lathe,11/19/2014 it was shipped. Today (11/28/2014) it arrived. Now Moss wants $130 for theirs less shipping. Holden £72.11 ($112.66 as of 3:25 PM) Shipping from UK £9 ($14.07) Total delivered $126.78. However the Holden knob was quite expensive so I (just now) opted to buy the knob and bracket from Moss. Physically it looks nice. It does state "Made in England". It does not state "Lucas" More to come. Jim B. |

I've bought items from Brown & Gammons, which I'm waiting on a shipment now from them and after converting the pound to the dollar, plus shipping, the lot usually comes out a tad cheaper than ordering from Moss here. It doesn't take much longer for the shipment either. Plus they have more of a selection of parts which Moss says are NA! We don't pay VAT either, another savings. Depending on what you are buying, there might be no savings at all, but there's a better chance of getting a better quality part than from Moss U.S. How's your rubber products from Moss holding up?JMHO. 30 years ago I rebuilt the suspension. At that time I purchased a Moss Rubber kit. I have yet to finish the car. Some of the rubber deteriorated. The engine stabilizer, the rubber on the steering column. I have not really looked that closely at the suspension bushings. OTOH, the unused rubber in he rubber kit was pristine. The rubber, which goes around the bonnet was pristine as were the pedal rubbers and the tail light seals and the gas tank rubber and the window draft excluder. So some has held up some has not. I think if it got exposed to oil, it died. Jim B. |

My cowl rubber that I got from B&G is different than the one from Moss, it is thinner on the flat area and the bead that lays on the scuttle lip is at a 90 degree angle verses Moss rubber with a V in it. There's no forcing the rubber down with the 90 in it as it lays down like it should with no effort, plus being thinner on the flat, the bonnet seems to lay down better. PJ Sorry Jim, I didn't mean to hijack your post. |

My TF came with a non original but period Tex, toggle switch. It has a clear plastic stalk that lights when the toggle is moved right or left. I have fitted an original VAC switch and anyone who wants it can have the toggle one for the cost of the postage. Jan T |

Should the top of the switch knob point in the direction of the turn or should the bottom (arm) point toward the turn? Imagine a dot on the top of the knob. The imaginary dot on my switch points toward the turn. Therefore, I push the arm of the knob away from the turn If mine is wired backwards, it may be difficult to reprogram the little bit of gray matter that still works! Thanks, Lonnie TF7211 |

A group of us (non-MGers) were discussing this yesterday in connection with Z-radius turn lawn mowers. I said that the lever was like a tiller or like handlebars on a bike - push the handle end to the right to turn left and to the left to turn right. Most of them disagreed but I think they're whacko. My TD turn signal works like handlebars - push the lever to the right so the arm points left for a left turn and vice-a-versa. Jud |
