MG TD TF 1500 - Some original bits

First up is this piece of welting from the front valance on the TD 1250. While originally green it was painted over at one point during a respray with black. Both ends were folded over as shown. It does not bend a 90 degree corner at the rear as many are inclined to do when finishing the front valance.

These two images show how it was simply folded over the ends.

This shows the thickness of the piping which is a hollow rubber. Note this measurement as many believe that it is of a smaller diameter than the rest of the body piping.

Here are the two pieces of welting that fit between the tub and rear fenders/wings. Of note here I suppose is that both ends are not folded over but are simply a straight cut with the end open.

L E D LaVerne

Of note here is that the piping is the same as the front valance and not a smaller diameter.

Next up is the single piece of front fender/wing and running board to the tub welting that I have here. The front was finished with this fold over. I can't say for certain about the rear as it is missing. I would guess that it probably had the same fold over.

Some more images of the fold

Unfolding the end

As you can see there is more than 2 3/8" of piping removed to make this fold. Although I did not take a photo, the piping is the same as the front valance and the rear fender/wing piping.

L E D LaVerne

This is a rear interior panel. Of note here is that the welting is sewn where as the exterior welting is not. The second photo shows the section where the piping has been removed as it meets the rear tack strip.

L E D LaVerne

Of note here is that the piping is a much smaller diameter than the exterior piping.

I over up these photos of the original kick panels which I removed from the car as well. Keep in mind that this car does have the roll hoop.

L E D LaVerne

The reason for these photos is to show that at least on this car, these panels were simply bent over the hoop and no forming of any kind was done around the hoop.

L E D LaVerne

In the box of bits was this single piece of piping which is larger that the exterior or interior piping. My guess is that it came from the door leather piping...which I removed but do not have here. If there is interest I imagine that the owner still has the pieces in storage and I can verify that.

One last item. This is the original piece of carpet which goes over the rear of the transmission tunnel.

L E D LaVerne

And this is the same piece from Heritage Trim. The Karval pattern is a good representation of the original although it the tuft is not as thick.

L E D LaVerne

As shown here

L E D LaVerne

Of note here is the trim piece at the rear. The original being much wider and no visible stitching.

L E D LaVerne

Thats about it for now.

Thanks for the detail shots.

Excellent information LaVern.

How thick is the blackboard that the carpet is on over the back of the transmission tunnel? Is it layered paper or?

It looks like what is called Waterproof Black Panel Board. Similar to glove box material, but black.

If you can, do some stills of you doing the fold in the end of the running board piping. I think I can figure it out, but it would be great to see it folded back.

I am glad you posted the front valance piping being the same size as the body. When I was looking on the UK parts sites, that is all they sell.

Wow, Thanks for doing this. Maybe Chris C can post this on his original MG-TD site? Interesting about the front piping size. Somehow I recall original cars with smaller ID, maybe they used both? Or that was for a TF? Very cool documentation! George

On my TF the piping down the front of the side panels and across the front apron was smaller than the rest of the car. I question the one behind the apron, as the car was damaged in that area in the early 60s and might not be the original size. PJ
