MG TD TF 1500 - Spare hub cap emblem

The enamel on my rear hub cap emblem is damaged. So rather than send overseas for enamelling have sort an original replacement. Have bought 2 supposedly original but on receipt find both have threaded fitting.
The original have a short stem & use both a flat & curved washer then held in place with a split pin.

There is "enameling" and then there is "enameling". The "real" process consists of a low melting glass filling the groves and then heated to the melting point so it both flows and levels.
The other is a paint.

I just checked some spare TD hubcap medallions the I have and they are not glass. I can pick at them with a needle.

So you can repair yours with a small paint brush and a can of "enamel".

I had purchased some hubcap Medallions from Moss USA some years ago (1984). They did have the boss wit the cross hole for the split pin, BUT they were not the same size. It was as though someone made a pattern to the original and did not allow for shrinkage.

I got originals off some rusty hubcaps on eBay and used the Moss ones on my (shop made) steering wheel center and gearshift knob.

I do not know if this is original but:
Using a small artist brush I painted the entire center part of the medallion
same color as body.
After paint drys, use razor blade to remove paint from the raised MG letters.

Have tested with a pin & its definitely hard enamel.
The diameter on the threaded section on both the so called originals is far smaller than the holes in the hub cap. So cutting to length & drilling is not an option.

When I acquired the TDC in 1964 there were emblems on the wheel hub caps made of zinc die cast alloy which deteriorated over time. The infill of the letters was black enamel paint (I was told the earlier non-TDC cars had red enamel). These 'pot metal' ones are still available from some EBay sources.

However the spare wheel has a much larger proper glass enamel MG badge just like the chipped one above.

Does this help differentiate the badges?

Ian I have a quantity of the zinc hub cap emblems which I have painted the infills red.
Its the spare wheel hub cap that I required the enamel emblem as a replacement. In my search have purchased 2 described as original by the sellers. These are both recognised parts suppliers. But they are incorrect in there description. They are assuming that the radiator enamel emblem is the same for the spare wheel hub cap. The dimensions are correct but the fitting method is entirely different. I will experiment with enamel pocket watch dial repair kit or check out the process used in restoring old bath tabs. If this is not successful will follow Franks recommendation.
Thank John

The badge fitted to my spare wheel hub cap is convex on the enamel surface to fit closely to the profile of the hub cap, and has a threaded inner stalk for attachment.

My understanding is (Tom Lange may confirm or correct) that these badges were only used on the later TDC models.

l always thought that the MG/TF spare medalion was much larger. Or was it on the TD/MK11.

The B&W late MK II/TF rear hubcap medallions are much larger than the false nose medallions. And yes the repops I’ve come across are not the correct size.
