MG TD TF 1500 - Spark plug wires
On reading the last thread about "Packard" wiring and rajah terminals, it seemed like a good idea to order some as my ignition wires are old and constantly giving trouble. Problem is, it looks like my distributor cap is a modern type, not the type with the screw-on leads you were giving instructions for. Is this old-style cap available in a repro form? Moss's all looked new. I can just put those style ends onto the Packard wire, of course, but I'm all for doing it in the way that will give the best possible current flow and strongest connections. So I've got the rajah connections... and the wire arrived today, but only half the length I ordered. Some days.... |

Geoff - all the caps you find today are going to be repros of the Lucas screw-in cap, which is what you really need. US caps with push-in terminals are just not great, and your set-up is never compatible with anyone else's if a part is needed. I sent a box off to you today; you should have it on Wednesday. Thanks so much, Tom! I've ordered the screw in type from LBCARCO. I just hope it fits whatever distributor is in there :) |

The wire-through-the-washer threaded connector is among the best available. The only problem comes when you need to connect the distributor to a high-output coil. It just means finding and installing a modern push-in coil connector. Bud |

My coil is definitely the push-in type, I'll have to modify that connection as well. It's an endless battle with one system in the car, then another :) |

Geoff - but when you are done, just think how much you will have learned! And, depending on timing, it may then be time to start again, like painting the Brooklyn Bridge. Seriously, you are chipping away at the problems one at a time, and you will have a better car for it - I promise you. I have a very nice Mark II TD in the shop for some engine work, and I am finding a number of SAE bolts holding the body together - not all of them, just some. And I am replacing the SAE bolts, so the car will be right. The owner may never notice the change, but I will, every time I bend over and look at the running board bolts. It shows when you fix things the right way, which it sounds like you are. Best, Tom Lange MGT Repair |
