MG TD TF 1500 - Speedo Cable Oil Dripping

Asking for someone else. Is there a way to stop excess transmission oil from creeping up the spedo cable and dripping on the floor? PJ

I used JB weld I believe.

Ditto what Gene said.

Thanks Gene, I checked the article out. Where can I get detailed measurements on how to modify the unit to except the O ring? It only says the unit can be replaced by one already modified. PJ

Paul,

I believe I was the one who showed this fix to Doug Pelton of FTFU when I posted it on the TABC site years ago after doing it to my housing.

The o-ring (Viton) goes between the flange and the holes near the gear, I don't believe it's a critical measurement. You'll have to have a machinist cut the groove inside the housing, then insert the o-ring and then push the shaft thru.

That should give you years of drip-free speedo cable usage.

I bought some of that self vulcanizing tape from ACE hardware and wrapped up the first foot of the cable as it comes out of the trans. No more dripping :) The tape is about 3/4" wide and available in a somewhat clear color.

Just clean things up good first then wrap it up. Been that way now for a few years.

In the 'Barrie's Notes' that accompanies the MGCC video on Rebuilding the gearbox, Step #34 in Reassembly says:

34) Insert the speedometer gear into its brass housing. A paper gasket is provided, but I prefer to use a small thin 'O' ring instead.

Paul; I found it much easier to machine 2 grooves in the shaft rather than the housing. Dug thru my O ring box till I found a nice fit in the housing bore; then cut the shaft grooves to accommodate them. Has worked well. Dan

I send mine to The Frame Up a few weeks ago and have reinstalled the modified exchange item. No more oil traveling up the cable. Highly recommended fix.
