MG TD TF 1500 - Speedometer

Well I have a problem with my speedo also. Probably not as serious as Buds thread below. One of the screws near the odometer fell out into the face of the gauge. So I took the speedo out and opened up the case, screwed the screw back into its place. I put the gauge back together and placed it back into the car. Went for a test ride as a formality to make sure the gauge still worked. Why wouldn't it right? I am pretty sure I never touched the needle but perhaps I did. The needle at a stop is now well below zero. Took the gauge out and apart once again. Not having a clue what I am doing I pushed the needle back to zero. Back in the car and again for a test drive. The needle fell below the zero again. I also noticed a little debris in the window. Third attempt. Took it out again. Cleared the debris and set the needle at 20mph. Put it back in the car and out for another test. The needle moved up but at a stop came back to 20. Why didn't it do this when I set it at zero? I also managed to put a minor scratch in the decal during all this so I am done for the night. Patience is gone at this point. Any thoughts guys?

Thanks,

Rich

I assume you are talking about a chronometric speedo? If so, the mechanism probably needs a good cleaning. I have repaired a number of these chronometric gauges and, for the most part a good cleaning in an ultrasonic bath followed by a very light oiling solved the problem.

Rich,
If you have scratched your dial and need a replacement, let me know as I know the chap who makes them. Not cheap though!
Both are available chronometric and dish faced dials miles or Kilometers per hour.
