MG TD TF 1500 - Speedometer cable/pinion TD-- what's missing?

Trying to install the speedometer cable and there seems to be something missing in the pinion housing. There is nothing for the square end of the cable to plug in to. It would just flop around in the housing if I were to screw down the cable end. Here is a picture looking into the pinion housing. (This is actually a picture of a spare transmission I have so excuse the filth, but the interior of the pinion housing looks the same.

Is there a part I'm missing? I couldn't find anything in the WSM or parts catalogs that seemed to fit in there.

Here is a picture of the cable end.

, David, I don't know what you have but that end of the inner cable usually goes to the instrument side. Attached is a picture of an after market cable, but the shape of the transmission pinion side is the same shape as the original steel cased unit.

Thanks, Richard. The other, smaller end is the same-- just a square end. Looks like I don't have the right cable. I've got two of these that are identical, except the one I pictured has brass fittings and the other doesn't. If they aren't speedometer cables, then I have no idea what they are for. They wouldn't fit the tachometer.

David, There appears to be nothing wrong with your pinion housing, you just have the wrong cable. The cable on the left in Richards photo has the proper end on it. Your cable is for another car. I just went through this replacing my pinion housing with a rebuilt one from Doug Pelton From The Frame Up. PJ

Thanks, Paul. I've got two of the wrong cables that came with my basket case TD. One has brass ends and is only 36" and the other has a gray plastic coating that is about 5' long. Pictures of ends below.

Anyone have any idea what these fit?

David Littlefield

Yep, either wrong cable, or the adapter piece that is swaged on is missing or was never installed. George
