MG TD TF 1500 - Spline Stuck in Clutch Disc

Went to pull the transmission on the TF and the spline is stuck in the clutch disc, I was thinking of opening the top bell housing inspection cover and getting a little Kroll on the spline plus tapping it with a long narrow bar, think it'll work? PJ
PJ Jennings

Have you tried putting it in gear and turning the output flange? Perhaps there is wear, and the spline has hooked in somehow. Maybe turn it back and forth a bit? Just a long-shot possibility.

Use the clutch release lever to push the box back whilst wriggling it.

If you remove the top bell-housing cover and remove the six bolts holding the clutch cover to the flywheel, (You will need to turn the motor over progressively and loosen sequentially), the whole clutch will come away with the gearbox.
This should only be necessary if the splines have really seized/rusted together.
An unusual problem. Hopefully it will come out with a bit of persistent wriggling etc.

Thanks fellas, I got it to move about a 1/2 inch out before quitting last night. I sprayed the spline with Kroll the best I could and this morning I'm going to spin it a bit with the starter while pulling on it, hopefully, it'll work. I have to put the shift lever back in to get it in gear, I took it out as not to hit the dash. I had about 150 lbs of pull on it yesterday and only got it to move about a 1/2 inch!

It is unusual Bob ,i think I've only ever had it once and that was a car that had a weeping coolant leak into the bell housing and rusted everything up
Paul
You haven't overlooked/missed one of the bellhousing bolts by chance--?

William Revit

No Willy all the bolts are out, everything disconnected. I'm going to try everyone's suggestions today, hopefully, they'll work. It would be less of a problem if it wasn't a TF with no room to maneuver and a royal pain to pull the lump out to work on it on the shop floor. I've got about another 3 to 4 weeks before my High Gear 5-speed kit comes, so I'm not rushed. I'll keep informed what I find. Thanks, PJ
PJ Jennings

I had the shifter remote installed and used it to lift the box out, should not hit the dash.

But you can engage a gear by sliding a selector forward or aft.

Did you disconnect the clutch rod and Speedo cable too?

Peter
P G Gilvarry

Peter, everything is disconnected. It soaked in Kroll last night and today I'm spinning the engine over to work the spline a bit while pulling on it.
PJ Jennings

I know you have but just in case, You have got the rear of the engine supported on something to take the weight -and not hanging down on the input shaft
William Revit

Maybe reconnect the clutch rod, slowly push on the clutch pedal?

That may drive the gearbox back.

Took Bob Schapels advice and pulled the pressure plate with the transmission, it came out well just a bit of a pain, an 18-inch 3/8 extension, and a short socket worked nice. Found out it wasn't rusted, it was one of the retaining springs that broke and lodged between the pressure plate and spline not allowing it to slide out! There must have been a message somewhere in this because there was no indication that anything was wrong when using the clutch, but needed attention. There isn't any rust anywhere, actually, it was a little over lubricated but not a drop on the clutch disc or pressure plate. I had to turn it sideways to pass the heater, but came out easily thank goodness! I think there are new springs available, which I'll replace all. Later PJ

Thanks for the update, bit of an odd one- well done
William Revit

PJ, looks like you dodged a bullet.

If one of the springs failed how good are the others, may pay to either replace all, or get a new pressure plate. Mine was a original rebuilt by an Aussie rebuilder.

The originals are probably better than the new ones.

Glad you got it out, now to wait fir the Xmas gift and get in installed.

Peter
P G Gilvarry

This is the missing spring, all will be replaced as the pressure plate and all the pressure springs are in very nice condition. Unless I could find a NOS pressure plate, which I doubt, I'll rebuild this one. I don't like the stuff that comes from Asia, junk.

PJ Jennings

PJ, Throw the clutch disc away. You get a new one with the hi gear kit that matches the splines on the T9. That disc is suspect and not worth the trouble to try and repair.
F Filangeri

PJ, not an opportunity to convert to a diaphragm clutch cover for a lighter clutch? I believe an MGB one may work. If so, you'd need to get three dowels installed in the flywheel to replace the two you've got.
Peter Allen

Moss has new Made in England Borg and Beck pressure plates. Not installed yet, but appears exactly as the originals. George

George, I didn't know that Moss was selling Borg & Beck pressure plates, that's what mine is, hmmm I'll have to take a second look. Thanks.
As to keeping the old clutch disc, too much trouble to pull one of these things apart, I never use an old clutch disc, they go in the trash. Thanks for the reminder though, much appreciated. PJ
PJ Jennings

Found out that the pressure plate springs are not available! Tried 4 suppliers and nothing! The New B&B pressure plate is $172.00 at LBC and $199.99 from Moss. Looks like LBC will get a call if I can't find the parts anywhere. PJ

Try Bob Granau or Hugh Pite, might get lucky.

I was at Bob's about 10 days ago, he has a lot of "stuff".

Gary Krukoski in Minnesota has some pressure plates and is sending me a good one. Same as late TD and MGA.PJ
PJ Jennings

Gary sent me a pressure plate and it looks great! Few shelf scratches looks like an original, super!. PJ

Just got a report that my 5-speed transmission will be shipped in 2 to 3 weeks. That's good news! PJ
