MG TD TF 1500 - Spluttering TF1250

G’day all,
Fine while warming up but when at normal running temperature acceleration is hesitant and then while pushing through at about 2000rmp she coughs and sputters and looses power when asked for more. Especially up hills.
I’ve checked points, timing, spark plugs, dash pots.
Any long distance clues folks?
Ciao for now John.

Sounds like fuel supply--if it has a filter is it clean-
You can check how much is getting to the cabs easy enough
Also could be seized up advance in the dist.---does the timing advance up ok when the revs are increased

Had something similar in my 79 MGB some time back. It was the nuts had loosed up on the intake manifold just enough to create a vacuum and lose power.

Maybe check the float levels? If not enough fuel in the float chamber then it might struggle when you put your foot down.

Thanks for your suggestions.
I’ll work through the tips.

John. After you work thru all the tips, if you have still not found the problem, then check the distributor, the TF dissy's body is made out pot metal while the stem ( i.e.the section that goes into the block, and holds the bushes for the shaft)is steel. These two sections can seperate, allowing the dissy to rotate slightly, thus throwing out the timing. This can be repaired by pinning, otherwise it's a new dissy.Cheers.

Been a while.
Got to the bottom of this.
Numerous visits to the distributor as part of my getting to the bottom of the misfiring in the past was fruitless.
Until today.
I was poking about with the distributor cap off and noticed a subtle movement of the base plate to which the points and condenser are affixed.
Upon closer scrutiny I found the 2 screws fixing the base plate to the body of the distributor were loose. So I secured the screws and bingo. All good now.
With the motor running and normal dynamics at work within the distributor the base place must have been bouncing around enough to cause the intermittent misfiring.
Easy fix but oh so frustrating 😡
