MG TD TF 1500 - Stainless Steel Exhaust Systems

It looks like you can only get stainless steel exhaust systems for the MGTD/TF. I have a few questions:

1. Are the Moss and Abingdon systems the same? Is one more original than the other?

2. Are the pipe and muffler dimensions correct? ie 1 1/2 inlet and 1 1/4 outlet/tailpipe? Silencer correct length/diameter?

3. Can you paint ss with heat paint and will it stick?

Chris,
I believe that you will find that the exhaust systems might vary is sound, dimentions, and quality from year to year depending on where either Moss or AS purchases them....
As far as painting stainless, yes they can be painted,, BUT
As far as the paint lasting in the heated environment,, I doubt it will last if the car is used frequently,,, even the low grade stainless that they use will discolor except for the last few feet...
I must ask,, why you would want to paint a stainless system????

Chris, I went through a bit of that a few months ago with 'the53'. Moss has a number of s/s exhaust systems, including the Bell systdem. A/S sells the Bell system. The Bell system hasn't changed in at least 18 years. The Bell system that I bought from A/S matches the one that I put on Lazarus in 1995 in every way.

As I recall, the inlet is 1 3/4" and the outlet is 1 1/2", which is TF size.

No s/s system would be 'original'.

Can't say about paint, but tape residue seems to want to be retained.

Best price for the Bell system is from that place in Michigan. I'll hunt up their name. Bud

I put a Falcon stainless system on the MGB in 2006. Perfect fit, easy installation and still looks like new. It made me decide to put one on the TF and it fit perfectly with no modifications. Very well made. In fact it is better made than the one I took off. It's not mirror finished like chrome as another brand, but looks, fits and sounds great. I polished the last foot on the tail pipe to a chrome like finish. I'm happy with both systems. PJ

I purchased the Bell for the TF from here in Kalamazoo, MI. They had the best price and I looked everywhere.

I intend to paint my exhaust with high temp paint. I did an extra step to ceramic coat the short pipe from the header to the silencer. I think this will help for reducing cockpit temperatures and vapor lock as well.

I chose Swain Tech Coatings because the white lightning finish is very similar to the the aluminized coating done at the factory. The cast iron header really looks great with the red engine.

Yup -- that's Engel.

Good people to deal with.

That's the place. There's one person who handles all opf the Bell stuff. BTW, don't try to buy just the Bell muffler. They sel Bell exhaust systems. (At a very good price.) Bud

Bud,

How does the Bell system sound? I chose Bell since the diameter of the pipe was the same I took off.

Just curious...

Thanks,

Frank, I've gotten very used to it. I've been driving with it for 18 years now. I find it to be quite 'mellow' with just enough meaty sounds when I ignore the tach going into the 5k region. Where abouts are you? Maybe I can swing by and let you hear it. Bud

I put a Bell on the MGB GT this year. I find it Great. No major difference in sound from the original. I would buy another for the TD when it needs one.

I have a steel system with 1 1/2" pipes all the way through. I thought I had some 1 1/4" tailpipe hangers but it looks like they are MGA (same as TD/TF but 1 1/2") so I guess I will leave well enough alone at least until I can find a pair of smaller hangers. Then maybe I will just find a way to marry my 1 1/2 in muffler with a 1 1/4" pipe.

I want to keep it black so that's why I wanted to determine if SS would hold the paint OK if I need to put on new.

1 1/4" hangers for TDs are going the way of unobtanium. Bud

Hi Bud,

You are a class act. I am near Lowell so I am a ways from you down in the South Shore.

I just can't wait to hear the exhaust note for the first time in 26 years when I last rolled it out for a spin with a HS friend of mine to cruise downtown Lowell... I was a freshman in college. The cobblestone streets and shake caused the rust in the fuel tank to clog an inline fuel filter installed at the time. Broke down in not so great section of the city after dark and my buddy was terrified... Got it going and there it sat in mom's garage since that time...

Sort of like when you enter a house and smell someone baking something your grandmother used to make when you were little and your senses brings it back like it was yesterday.

For what ever it's worth I've got a Falcon system on the B, the TF and the TD. The B has been on there for 20 years with no issues. The stuffing has come out of the muffler on the TF after 20 thousand miles. I think the warranty only covers rust through. Only about a thousand on the TD.

Frank, you may get to meet Lazarus. I have a daughter who lives in Lawrence. Drop me a note so that I can get your email address, mine's above. Bud

We have a Bell exhaust on our supercharged TD. The sound quality is fantastic, and not loud. The tube diameter is larger than the original TDS and the muffler is straight thru, so it offers minimal restriction.

It also came from Kalamazoo.
