MG TD TF 1500 - Starter Handle Clips
Has anyone used the Moss TD starter handle clips (item 13, 406-070, on page 54 of the MGT-142 catelogue)? My PO installed cheap big box spring clips (see image) that look ugly and don't hold the handle in place without tie-wrapping it. Thanks. Jud

Yes Jud, I have nothing to complain. Gerard |

I've used the Moss clips, but find they are prone to chipping the paint on the starting handle. |

Thanks Lew. As you can see, the paint on my handle is pre-chipped. Probably came as a packeage set with the pre-stretched timing chain. I'll order a set (3?) of clips. They'll definitely be better than what I've got. Jud |

I was thinking of gluing some very thin strips of rubber to the inside of my clips to prevent the chipping as my freshly painted bespoke handle is schmick. One of the guys in the club had just repainted his crank handle & was really annoyed that the clips ate the paint the first time he fitted it. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Peter, rubber would work but it might be a little tough to insert the handle into the clips. How about just using some black felt? It's thinner and will make it easy to insert and remove. |

"I've used the Moss clips, but find they are prone to chipping the paint on the starting handle" The first time the handle is used as intended, it get chipped :-) Cheers - Dave |

I bought a set of the Moss clips and they come nowhere near close to fitting the handle -- way too big. Although I cannot guarantee my handle is original..... |

Original clip from my TF 1500 for comparison. Phillips screws used in later cars. Matthew. ![]() |

Thanks Kevin. Great idea. I have offcuts from lining the side curtain box so I'll give that a try. I like chips Dave but only when accompanied with fish :) Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Jud, If you are going replace the clips, AND go for originality,, I believe that your handle should be just oposite of what you show in your pic,, the handle part should be on the right side, with a third clip holding the verticle portion,, SPW |

Steve, thanks. I'm not striving for a "Peter Hehir" level of originality but I try for it whenever I can. I'll reverse the handle. I'd had it out several times to turn the engine for setting the static timing and the valve lash. I then discovered that I could turn the engine with the fan so I just stuck the handle back in randomly. Jud |
