MG TD TF 1500 - Starter question

I never imagined the headaches I'd get from trying to rebuild my starter. I think I have it ready to go back together. My final question (hopefully) is what is the purpose of the stiff paper like material that sits between the housing and the coils? The reason I ask is I'm not sure of its orientation. If I remember it slides down just below the openings in the case. If it's an insulator I want to be sure of where I position the seam. Thank to all who helped on my previous starter questions

I don't know if this will help you - but in this image the paper insulation is placed under the field coils opposite the terminal. It does not appear to protrude into the openings where you get to the brushes.

That paper is called fish paper and is an insulator. Its purpose in line is to keep the two screws that hold the end pieces in place from contacting any wires that cross in front of them. The paper should be formed out from the starter housing such that the screws go between paper and the starter housing. Cheers - Dave

Starters and generators are parts I consider not worth the home repair guy's time, when the expert can do it so much quicker, easier and better. I have done it and could again, but it's no fun for me trying to track problems down, figure out under which bench the growler rests, have the right bushes and bearings in stock, undercut commutators, etc. The last generator I had overhauled was $75 with a 12-month warranty, and I consider it money well spent.

In my mind, water pumps, shocks, re-bushing carbs, distributors, starters and generators are all things I rely on other experts to repair, just as I would rather have a machine shop surface grind my flywheels, rather than set it up on the lathe, hit some hard places, and not ever be satisfied.

Like me Tom, your just getting old. Everyone has to try to do those jobs at least once so they can say they can do it. Then we understand it ain't worth our time and sent them out for the experts to do.

I'm beginning the teardown tomorrow on my starter. Wish me luck!
