MG TD TF 1500 - Steering wheel restoration

I have several original steering wheels that I would like to have restored, all British but not MG. A TR2/3, AH 100/4, a 1950 Allard and an Alvis. Can the group recommend anyone state side that specializes in this art/craft? Thanks Jack

Ben Cordsen in Fort Collins, Colorado used to do this work. I don't know whether he still does. http://cordsendesign.com

Gordon Lawson did this, but sadly, I read he has passed away. Just do a search on the archives for "steering wheel" and you will find a lot of threads of people who have done this themselves with wood (including me). It's a great project and well worth doing. I believe there are also a few companies that do the plastic if you want original original...

http://pearlcraft.com.au/ does amazing stuff with the plastic.

Nobody I know stateside, tho...

I tried to get hold of Cordsen before and he never responded to my request, so I restored the wheel myself, didn't turn out too bad. PJ

A little bit what it looked like before.

Paul - Ever think of a home business? That wheel looks as good as any restored steering wheel I have ever seen. Cheers - Dave

Dave I thought about it once, but it's a lot of hand work grinding out the old cracks to accept the epoxy mixture, then hand filing sanding and painting. My wheel has 3 coats of color and 3 coats of clear. Their a royal pain in the butt to do and time consuming. Just for the record, here's the epoxy I use. PJ

Removing the dents on the bottom of the hub was not too bad, I used a tapered rotary cutter and took off about 1/8 inch of base to remove the dents.

I built a mold for John Gunnel of Gunners Great Garage, a resto shop in Wisconsin. He was going to try to restore his TD wheel.

Not hard to build the mold, but the type of plastic to use would be something I don't know about.

Hello Lew and all. Yes Jack I did find Ben at that link and he is doing well and still does wheel restoration work. I've seen his work on show T-series cars and it is breath taking. Thanks for the link. Jack
