MG TD TF 1500 - Sticky Tachometer

Okay, got the tachometer all hooked up. Huzzah! No extraneous noise or anything, and the tachometer registers okay. It doesn't move smoothly and seems to take a long time to register lower revs. Is this something that is normal or can I oil anything to make it work more smoothly?

'51 TD. FWIW, I don't think the tachometer has been hooked up in over 30 years.

If it is a flat faced one then jumpiness is normal as it is chronometric.Dished face ones are magnetic and work much smoother

The glass is curved, the actual face of the tach is flat.

AB,

Then you've got an early TD with a tach that functions as it should!

Kind of acts like a blood pressure test. It registers higher revs and then slowly works its way lower. I can live with it if that is how it is supposed to work. If it can/should run smoother, just want to get it working right.

ab, it sounds like the correct movement for a chronometric rev counter, but if you do open it up to clean and lube. use clock oil for the lube. available from several sources on the web. regards, tom

AB - The flat faced Tachs are indeed clock work mechanisms as stated by others. The works has an escapement wheel just like a watch and it will adjust the reading on the face every second of time. you can take them to a watchmaker for cleaning and lubrication. Over time, they do get a build up of dirt and "crud" that can bind them up a little. Speedo is the same.

Sounds like all is functioning as it should. I think that they are really "neat".

Great. Thanks for the info. I'll live with it for now. Likely get it cleaned/lubbed at some point in the future.
