MG TD TF 1500 - Story on German TD's

Find your way down to page 7 of the newsletter the link goes to. You’ll find the story of a limted number of TDs assembled in Germany in the 50s.

Recently attended the G.O.F in Ocala, FL. Two German TD's were parked side by side bearing sequential S/N's 772 and 773. One was a "Barn Find" and was trailered to the event from No. Carolina, albeit still able to drive under its own power, the other (modified TD) was driven.

The article stated there were between 30 - 40 units produced. It was said at the G.O.F, there were only 24 units made in Germany. Not knowing the full history of this, I'm curious to know does this mean 24 units were shipped to the USA and the rest elsewhere throughout the world?? Does anyone hold the answer??

At the moment we know of only 4 survivors of the 24 'Made in Germany' TD's, 3 of them located in USA:

TD8872 Todd Talberg, Florida (the two-tone TD)
TD8873 Kevin Wiseman, N-Carolina (the barn find)
TD9238 Bob Wilson, Illinois (the red one)
TD9240 Jan van der Weij, The Netherlands

And as this pic shows there were not 2 but 3 of them on the Ocala GOF. The Dutch one couldn't make it in time... ;-)

And a pic of TD9240, the Dutch one...

The barn find one is for sale. It was listed here and on mgexp.com recently.

I have a 1954 TF which was has not been on the road for about 40 years. Getting it ready to drive again. It has a British MG vin tag on the left side and a German one (same numbers on the right. It also has exterior parking lights just behind the doors, and the knock offs are a type with no wings, but a type that has like a large nut you use a wrench to get off. Gauges are all in english, not metric, and it is a left hand drive. Very old man I bought the car from knew of no history, but that he bought it from a neighbor because it would no work in reverse. Best I can tell the vin says it was an export to the USA. Maybe a GI owned it and was stationed in Germany, for a time, and had to have a German VIN tag and make the conversions? Does this sound right? I'm interested to hear your thoughts. Thank you, George

Just to correct the earlier note, all three of the U.S TD's were on hand at our G.O.F. South's 50th anniversary event. Our club had a member a few years back who also had a German TD. He moved to S.C and possibly back to Florida. No additional info as to where this car is now sitting.

GH Higginson - if you send me the chassis number of your TF I can look in the Production Records, and see if there is anything unusual about the car mentioned there.
