MG TD TF 1500 - strange crank grind
What do you think about this, Gerard ![]() |
Gerard Hengeveld |
Did a large piece break off ????? |
Steve Wincze |
Steve : No I found this strange grind on a crank send to me . Gerard |
Gerard Hengeveld |
I would send it back. Normally, a crank is balanced by adjusting the weight of the counterweights I thought. It looks like the beginning of a disaster. |
Jim Merz |
Gerard, Wow! Possibly someone did some grinding to cover some past damage for perhaps a broken rod?! If the crank will balance out dynamically and you smooth off any rough edges you should still be able to use it. XPAG cranks typically like to break where the #1 journal meets the counterweight. |

Gerard, was it produced this way or was it machined this way? If produced this way it might have been for a shorter stroke engine, but I do not think there was a engine of this type with a shorter stroke. If it was machined this way after production, it was for performance, be damned with balance! I have seen many race engines with the counter balance weights removed for faster RPM acceleration for short periods of time! Less weight to spin! Marlboro MD. Little Le Mans, in the '60's their was a a Plymouth Valiant with this done to it, It was very fast, until it broke the crank, in the 10th hour of a 12 hour race. This was an International race with NASCAR, F1, & Indy car drivers & teams, Including Somky Eunick, I was a pit man for my dad. |
Len Fanelli |
Len, The big question is was it machined that way or not. I don't know . I think the seller don't know either. My biggest concern is : should I use it or not. Thanks , Gerard |
Gerard Hengeveld |
I seriously doubt that it can be balanced - your machine shop/engine guy can advise you. If you have no choice but to use it, have it magnafluxed first, and then see what you will have to spend on it for grinding, etc. Might not be worth it. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Were/are there any other cranks that will fit our engines, such as a certain Austin model or? PJ |
Paul S Jennings |
Paul there are the new chrome moly/ billet cranks available through moss. manley ford, B&G etc or there is currently an NIB OEM one on ebay in the MGTC section |
W. A. Chasser Jr |
Gerard, you need to ask a crankshaft specialist, & 0r an engine balancing specialist. |
Len Fanelli |
Len that has been done. the crank was magna fluxed twice ( dry powder and wet magnetic particles (with a coil ) and then balanced . Was out 18 grams, Flywheel flange out of thru by 3 thousands and stone grinded to 1 thousand for the rest its OK . I'll keep it. Gerard |
