MG TD TF 1500 - SU carbs H2 and H4

I've "discovered" that I've got a couple of new rebuild kits for SU H4 carbs ( SU part num. CRK 205). However I need a couple of rebuild kits for my H2 ( MGTC) carbs. What components are different between the the types. At present Burlen - The SU people are out of stock of the H2 kits and I don't really want to open my existing kits until I establish whether they are really any use to me. Advice please.

The kits are quite different. The float bowl mounting to the main bodies are different, as are the manifold and air pipe gaskets. I believe the jet sizes are different as well. In short you won’t be able to use 1/2 of the kit

Agree Bill. It's just the main supplier who holds all the rights to SU in the UK (Burlem) are currently out of stock. No reply yet as to when that situation is going to change. Suspect more virus repercussions. Will have to be patient. Jan

I, and others, have never found Burlen to be a company that's too customer focused when I've rang or emailed them, they seem to be 'take it or leave it' as they are often (but not always so do shop around) the only source.

I know a local company that buys a reasonable amount of SU/Burlen parts but gets it through one of SU/Burlen's customers as trade rather than through SU/Burlen direct as they could because of how SU/Burlen are.

I ordered twice from Burlen, both times they answered my emails, shipped promptly and it arrived in good time.

During the lead up to Brexit, pre-Covid when the UK Pound was in the tank a lot was there to be saved.

But, my comments are based on only 2 interactions purely by email, one was for a fast-idle kit versus Moss here that listed all the individual parts separately at 3 times the price.

Caveat Emptor.

Moss Motors lists them. https://mossmotors.com/catalogsearch/result/?cat=&q=su+h2+rebuild+kit

You can try Joe Curto, too.

Ebay, $154.95 + $16.37 shipping USD for a kit to do the pair.

Speak as you find.

I, and others, have found them to be not particularly helpful (and I don't mind grumpy and miserable, I'm used to English service as was born and live here, bit surprised about it in the "sales" department though).

Don't fully trust the SU parts section of the website, and the make/model and parts search facility on it is poor won't even find some parts listed on the site.

I tried to point out an error in a parts listing on the site for some parts I'd ordered from them but they ignored this and it remains even now. (originally I thought they wouldn't have got it wrong and it must be me but they had and it wasn't me).

I know many don't like the thought of the venerable SU company not being treated like saints but they're not even that good let alone saintly. 🙂

The jets (0.90) and bearings should be the same. The throttle butterfly will be different, but the shaft I think is the same diameter, but might be a bit too long. Float components are different.

In The UK, NTG shows that they have the kit in stock.

Seems to be different to the BFS kit, check if it contains the parts you require and order any that are missing, separately.

Thank you all. Conflicting reports on Burlem who I've never had problems with in the past. Think I might try NTG although their needles are more expensive. Should I assume they get their parts from Burlem. Can't see there being numerous companies manufacturing the various components.
JK Mazgaj

The metal parts might, or might not, be from Burlen but the gaskets aren't SU so you'd have to check with NTG about the metal parts too. However SU may well buy in the needle and seat and perhaps other metal parts which may, or may not, be of better quality, The SU gaskets seem to me to be of good quality compared to others available.
