MG TD TF 1500 - SU needles

I have just checked the colour of the spark plugs after a long run and found them quite black around the edges and down inside although the electrodes are a good light brown. I then checked the carb needles I know that ES are standard EM are rich EP weak but mine are fitted with EU I have checked EU needle reference and they don't seem to be listed for the TD or in fact any MG. has anyone come across these needles and does anyone know if these will run rich or not. I have some EP needles so I will try them without altering anything else to see if they lighten the colour of the plugs. Any advice will be appreciated .
Thanks,. Adrian Wells.

Thomas,

This is the best tool I have found, for comapring SU needles.

Is your float level correct? Are your current needles set up as per the factory shop manual? Regards, Tom

There is very little difference between the three needles you list, with the EU being the leanest. I would look elsewhere for your rich situation, like the fuel level in the float bowl.

Select the .90 jet at the top of the mintylamb page, then enter the letters.

Sorry - read .090 jet above.

Thomas. The fuel level should ideally be between 1/8 and 3/16" from the top of the jet when fully up.

The needle ES starts with 0.089" dia and tapers down to 0.073" dia.
The needle EU starts with 0.089" dia and tapers down to 0.074" dia.
The needle EP starts with 0.089" dia and tapers down to 0.075" dia.
Thus EU provides a slightly weaker mixture than standard ES, but not as weak as the suggested EP, which should lighten the plug colours.
Ofcourse, this all depends on how many flats the hexagon nuts need to be screwed down for even running with no flat spots.
EM tapers from 0.089" to 0.0705", so giving a rich mixture.
All my data comes from the Burlen SU needle profile charts.
