MG TD TF 1500 - Sump Screen Orientation - TF
I'm still wrestling with my sump because I didn't take photos when I disassemble the pickup. It is in a very early model TF. The flange attaches to the side of the sump with two safety wired screws (like a TD), instead of four screws like later model TFs.
My question: > Does the open end of the screen face the snorkel, as in the top photo? (this seems most likely) > Or, does the solid bottom of the screen face the snorkel, as in the bottom photo? Note the location of the spring and washer in each photo. Thanks for your help, Lonnie TF681 TF7211 |

WSM fig A4 shows the open end inserted and the spring holding it in place then the washer followed by the snorkel and bolt. RayTF2884 |

Thanks Ray. You came to my rescue ... again.
The TF engine diagram to which I believe you are referring is page A34 in my TD/TF WSM (AKD 580A). The screen orientation on a TD engine without the snorkel is the same as on a TF engine with the snorkel. You're right. The bolt, with locking tab washer and fiber washer goes into the snorkel, then the steel washer, spring, closed end of the screen, and into the threaded pickup. Kinda like the second photo in my original post, although the washer goes against the snorkel instead of against the screen. When I finally figured out the path of the oil from the snorkel to the pump, the orientation of the screen made sense. Oil in the sump is picked up through the snorkel. Into the basket for the screen. The open end of the screen is pushed against the top of the basket by the spring at the closed end of the screen. Oil passes through the outside of the screen. Into the side-opening in the pickup tube that is inside the screen. Up the tube and flange attached to the sump. Through the hole in the gasket-edge of the sump. Into the block. And finally, into the oil pump. Whew! Thanks for your help, Lonnie TF681 TF7211 |

Gosh, seems a lot of us had cataract surgery! Great not needing glasses! PJ |

My only problem was that I had one done in October and had to wait till now for the other. The colour disparity left to right was intense. I bought a pair of light brown trousers in September only to find they were slate grey when I had the op. Ray |
