MG TD TF 1500 - Surprise!

Inner dash made and installed, new dash ready to put on. Removed all gauges to replace rubber etc. Now cleaning up the gauge panel. PO had installed the following gauges: Ammeter, Oil pressure, Water Temperature, Combo Oil and Water temp and a very small Electric Tachometer placed in a homemade hole in the lower center of the panel. I found a horn button to fill that hole ( or maybe use the Ammeter) and will buy an ignition switch for the upper right. My surprise came when I found the oil temperature line ran to the radiator where I had assumed it was the water temp line. Oh well itīs all out now. Just wanted to share my trials with you.
Sorry for rambling.
MY REAL QUESTION TODAY IS:

I have seen the oil pressure gauge line connected to the top as well as the bottom of the external engine oil line. Any thoughts on this ?

Thanks very much to everyone.

To get an accurate pressure reading I believe that the gauge line should feed off of the block (lower) fitting.

The line has to come off the fitting in the block. Fitting to the fitting on the head results in a verylow oil pressure reading. Cheers - Dave

Thanks for your help guys!!

Whether the line is connected to the upper or lower location it will accurately read the oil pressure at that location. If you want to read the pressure in the main oil galley use the block pick up. If you want to read the pressure at the head, use the upper location. Either location will give you the information that is vital to monitoring engine condition and that is sudden dramatic change requiring a quick response from the operator or the steady gradual decrease over a long period of time as a monitor of engine wear.
Regardless of pick up location, it has no bearing on the actual oil pressure within the engine...the pressure at the head will read 20 psi lower than the pressure at the block as it is read downstream of the metering line. Regards, Tom
