MG TD TF 1500 - Switch
Is this the proper switch for my 51TD
![]() |
Tom Maine |
I have TD7191, built in 51. The switch looks identical to mine except: 1. my lettering is completely worn off 2. on the metal cover around the key slot, I have MRN engraved above the slot and 50 below the slot. |

Definitely. The later switch is very similiar but has a "window". Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

By "later" Peter means replacement switch; I don't believe the "window" switch was ever supplied in TDs. Tom |

Yes, but it should go on the dash... George |

R W - I believe the number "MRN 50" on you ignition switch is the key code. MRN keys codes run from 1-54. Typical use MG T series TC and TD I used the key code on the ignition switch of my TF to have new keys cut to the original profile. I bought from: Triple-C Motor Accessories 1900 Orange St. York, PA 17404-5228 (888) 854-4081 (717) 854-4081 http://www.triple-c.com/Products/608/KEY_2DMRN/MRN_KEY_CUT_TO_CODE or same company on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/MRN-KEY-CUT-TO-YOUR-CODE-MG-TC-MG-TD-AUSTIN-MORRIS-/270430199858?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3ef6e56032 New MRN key cut with your "50" code ... $14.95 Lonnie TF7211 |

Continuing key code info ... Triple-C also has this genuine Wilmot Breedon MRN key available: http://www.triple-c.com/Products/1241/KB_2DWB_2FMRN/GEN._WILMOT_BREEDON_MRN_BLANK_KEY Lonnie TF7211 |

My choice is Pete Groh at http://britishcarkeys.com/ Bud |

The MRN key sequence had numbers from 1 to 50, but was only used until sometime in 1948, so is inappropriate for a TD or TF. The application data is as follows: Series Sequence Numbers Dates of Use MRN 1 – 50 1932 - 1948 FA 501 – 625 1948 – 1955 FP 626 – 7xx 1955 – 1962 FS 7xx – 925 1962 - FT Not MG FR Rover Only |

Tom Maine. I can't tell from the picture but it looks like you are missing the inner hood support (the hood strip sits on top of it and wedges the hood strip between the inner support and outer cap support. Without it you are going to be putting stress on your hood top panels which could cause them to crack and also potentially damage your paint too. The hood, when fully open, should always be suspended off of the other panel and never laying down. All the stress should be on the hood strip, never the hood itself. If you have the inner hood strip supports on both the front and back, ignore this message and continue on. For others that their hood lays flat, be warned. |

Chris Maybe in a new thread you could post a picture of the inner hood support. Thanks. Jud |

Thanks for all the input. |

Thi/xs took some hunting, through the archives looking for 'bonnet support' (not hood). The archive led to my Ttalk website 'Picture this'. Hunted it down and found the image. Notice the support piece below the upper one. BTW, here's an example of our need to agree on a common language, i.e., hood vs. bonnet. Bud ![]() |

Thanks Bud.. I don't think my TD has that part (neither front nor rear). The Moss TD Chrome page shows parts 407-200 & 300 but the pictures don't look like the support in your T-Talk photos. It appears that 407-200 is goes in front (near the radiator cap) and 407-300 goes in the rear and they appear to be what I have. Did you make the lower supports yourself? Thanks. Jud |
J K Chapin |
No,Jud, that's the OEM part. It would be Moss' 407-300. The same piece is used at the front. 407-200 is the chrome piece that goes over the center strip at the front and rear. It's shown as Moss #12. The OEM Part No. for the Inner Hinge Support is AAA567. The Outer Support is AAA566. They are used on TC, TD and TF. Bud |

Bud I believe the rubber bonnet strip on my car was trimmed away underneath the bonnet end-cap. Is that not correct? Also noted I do not have the support piece and the damaged paint to prove it. Something else I have to get. :) Glad we have this forum to point the way. I don't think I have ever really looked at this bit in the past. Bonnet fits really well as is though? Rod ![]() |

Rod. Have another look @ Chris's site. He devotes a special section, complete with detailed pics showing how to fit the hood (bonnet in English Bud as it's an English car) & it shows the cutaway in the rubber. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Bud I suppose one should always count the horses teeth. I looked and it thins out I DO have the lower supports. Thank. Jud |
