MG TD TF 1500 - T Series Registry

I never noticed it before, but being the color designation letters in the registration are very clear the ckd cars use the letter H and as I read it meaning only CKD colors. Where is there a CKD color chart and how was it used for specific cars/colors? Curious. PJ

The CKD cars I've come across while updating Gordon Lawson's T Numbers database were all in primer. At least that is what was reported.

Tim, So I would think that would indicate the factory on the receiving end was to paint them in their colors. I would assume there would have been a color chart for prospective buyers to choose from, wonder if that chart still exists? PJ
Paul161

Hi Paul My car here in Ireland was a CKD.It arrived in kit form to avoid tax and was built in Booth Bros in Dublin. As to the final colour the car ended up I have no idea how this worked although I do have a contact for the son of one of the directors who might have some records and I was going contact him. The original old brown log book has the car colour down as maroon and my mum tells me this is the colour they got the car in the early 60s.
Obviously this wasn't an original MG colour so it would be interesting to know the various colours available.
I will let you know what deletion.
Attached are pics of the 2 information tags under the bonnet.

I will let you know what I discover. Darn predictive text!

Paul, I was actually talking about TDs. But I agree it would be interesting to know if there was a color chart for CDK cars. However, the buyer might choose whatever color he or she wanted regardless of the factory or assemblers options. Several CDK cars went to South Africa (TDs). Hopefully someone with one of those cars will respond with what they know.

Darryl, Hard to read the numbers on your plate, did they stamp a number on the dumb iron? PJ
Paul161

Would either of you guys know the best way to clean the Id plates. Apologies didn't mean to divert the conversation.
Thanks Darryl
D Lamb

Looks like they were quite crudely stamped here in Ireland. This is what is on it and what I later found out it means!
stamped HDH55
H=MG
D=2 seater sports
H=Primer (colour)
5=CKD RHD
5=Primer (paint type)

Paul I couldn't find any number on the dumb iron when I went looking at the time. So I don't think it was ever stamped.

Darryl, the information on this page might be of help in restoring a chassis plate.

Look at the bottom of the page.

Darryl, Only an educated guess, but here's what I came up with, looks right, but?

TF2913
XPAG/TF (engine no.)
28-Jan-1954
TF2913 CKD

Darryl, Tom Lange can search the factory records by chassis number and engine number you might ask him to search your engine number. tlange at acadia.net It fits in with other cars manufactured at about the same time but isn't listed on the T Register page.

This is what I know about the engine. Although I have also discovered I have a gold seal 1500 TF XPEG replacement engine in mine with a cobbled up tag with the original engine number on it. I then researched gold seal replacement engines and discovered the following.

Engine No. XPAG/TF/3274I
XPAG/TF/ = 1250cc
XPEG/TF/ = 1500cc

The engine number was stamped into the VIN plate by Booth Brothers (not Abingdon)

Just found a note stating "a large number of cars with XPAG engines have had BMC (British Motor Corporation) replacement engines (Gold Seal) fitted distinguished by a letter prefix A to E probably denoting the over bore size followed by a number. With replacement engines the original number of that engine can sometimes be deciphered just above the octagonal plate, stamped on the block. Be prepared it may have come from a Y type!"
Hence the gold colour of the block.

What is a "Gold Seal Replacement Engine"?Gold Seal Replacement Engines were primarily offered during the production of the MGTC but there were some offered during the early days of the TD and many of these may have made there way to MGTD's in later years. During the early days of imports there were shortages of trained workers and parts to perform major repairs or rebuilds to the XPAG engines that MG used. Because of this the factory created a set of spare engines that could be swapped out for the original, instead of repairing it. The factory would exchange your worn out engine with these replacement engines. These engines were painted gold in color instead of dark red and came with a special ID tag designating them as such. The tags were made of brass and were affixed to the block stating that it was an original factory replacement engine. Sometimes these tags were affixed to the same location as the engine ID tag. In later years of TD production the same sort of process was carried out by dealers and engine rebuilding facilities who would have a set of spare engines on hand. In this manner they could swap your tired engine for a rebuilt one and in a matter of hours, or a few days, get you back on the road. Your engine would then be rebuilt at their leisure and wind up on some other MGTD later on.

A gold engine! With what I think is the original engine colour showing through...
