MG TD TF 1500 - T-Type Racing

If you are interested in watching T-Type Racing, go to the "MG Motorsport' Subject Heading and read the Thread Title "T-Type racing". In it I have made a suggestion that the (virtually unused) subject heading could become a "database" of MG Racing videos. After that explanatory post I have tried to start the ball rolling with a couple of videos. I have suggested a new Thread Title for each video and a possible format, although I am sure improvements could be made.

The reason for this is that a couple of years ago I asked about MG racing videos. LC Laurent, Len Fanelli, David Wandell, Kurt Burgess kindly made some suggestions and I enjoyed those videos but still find it difficult to find new ones.

The idea might not work, but it is worth a try.

The subject of T Type racing exercises the mind of the MGCC T Register greatly and we try to encourage more participation at every opportunity, but it is difficult.

There has been a marked decline in participation and we are lucky if we get 3 or 4 T Types on the grid at the MGCC race meetings, and of course this means they have to join in with other appropriate MGs, usually MGAs. We are encouraging members to try their hand at less-demanding events than racing such as hill climbs and the like, but the age profile of our members does not help at all.

The heyday was in the 1960s and 70s when T Types were cheap, and modifying them for racing was relatively inexpensive. Today you have to be relatively well-heeled to participate, as although T Types are not astronomically expensive compared to other classics, they are far too expensive for younger drivers to contemplate.

The equivalent series today in the UK is the MG Trophy race series where you can pick up a race prepared MG ZR for c.3K UKP. The series gets grids of more than 30, gets sponsorship deals and is shown on the the minor UK TV channels. And all the drivers are young(er).

In complete contrast, racing for Triple M cars has seen a resurgence. It’s got something to do with reliving MG racing of the 30s, and the disposable income of their now owners. T Types seem stuck in the middle between the two race series. And just in case you’re thinking this, the Triple M drivers don’t want T Types in their races ‘cos they’re too fast … 😊.

Thanks Rod and Frank.
Could you go to the "MG MOTORSPORT" subject heading, start a new thread (titled suitably) and under "Your comment" add:

The Video Title
Video code (if known)
Duration (if known)
Brief description of the video.

Use a new thread for each video. I am hoping that if this catches on, people will put in details of good MG Motorsport videos and that Subject heading will become an easy source. Interested viewers could then easily "copy" the link and/or title and paste into "Google" or YouTube. There might even be a way of entering "live" links, but that is too far advanced for me … after-all, I am a TC driver!

So far there are about 8 videos listed under the "MG Motorsport" subject heading. The only problem is that I put them all there! There must be other people who can add some?

A year or so ago, I saw a good one of a very fast TD from USA (green I think) but now can't find it to add. The one featuring the white TF at Palmer is also very good. Looking on YouTube often seems like a wild goose chase to me, hence my suggestion of using this forum.

If you want to see what the driver's view is like at 120 mph in a s/c TC Special, I suggest you look at the thread titled TC Racing under "MG Motorsport". You will see how the XPAG performs amongst a s/c Lotus (maroon), 4.8 litre OHV GMC (green), Gemini Cosworth Formula Junior (red), Austin Healey 2.9 litre Special (blue), Ford 4.5 litre V8 Special (silver), Cooper Climax T39 Bobtail (white) and a Lola Climax (black/red). Turn up the sound!

I don't see any links when I go to "MG Motorsport" just the threads with info on the video. What am I doing wrong.

In each thread there is a title and a code. The code is not a live link. I am not computer savvy enough for that. If you copy and paste the code into YouTube or Google, it should work.

For example, copy and paste the following code into YouTube or Google. DIlAm1CQgv4
Another way might be to copy the title into YouTube. "MGTC Phillip Island" should bring up the same video.

Good luck Jim, Bob

Bob,

Thanks, I learned something. the copy/paste to Google works.

Bob. I enjoyed the Phillip island video. Watching your car early into the race being a bit twitchy until the tires warmed up was interesting to watch. I found myself applying the brakes for you in a couple of the corners as you were coming in hot, had picked your line and then had a much slower car dive down in front of you. I thought for sure you were going to have a bad day. Thankfully that wasn’t the case.
When you had open air I front of you and could drive the course unimpeded your lines were great into the corners and the transitions were smoothly executed. It made me think about what it must have been like for my dad in his TD/c. I realize they are two very different beasts in handling characteristics but the exhilaration factor alone slicing and dicing with other competitors of unknown skill levels and their own abilities to control their cars made for some great racing. Just out of curiosity what tires are you using? I know rubber technology has greatly improved. Is this car running the “168” camshaft, TC cam or a modern grind? Can we see photos of the car? engine pics? Any performance specs without giving away your personal secrets?

Thanks Bill, Yes, the car is "twitchy" on cold tyres but also because it has a standard TC steering gearbox, tie rod ends etc. That makes it a challenge on the fast corners. When the tacho is where the colour starts, in top gear, it is 100 mph, so those fast corners are at that speed. (120 mph down the long straight according to GPS)

I guess you refer to the blue Austin Healey Special which I suspect was watching me in his mirrors and tried to stop me coming up the inside. If you watch the other cars in front on that lap and others laps, you will see he was not taking the usual line for the corner. No other cars got in my way as they were just quicker out of those corners.

The red Gemini Cosworth was alongside me through several corners. You can't see him alongside but you can hear him and see my line is leaving him room.

Yes, the car has a 168551 cam and the boost is public knowledge as "sufficient". The capacity is 1366 cc. I run Hoosier "Vintage TD" 15" x 500 tyres. (TD had nothing to do with T-Types). It has a Laystall head and Godfrey Marshall J100 s/c. The body is light alloy over steel tube, but the rest of the car is very TC. Standard TC gearbox, distributor etc. The only non TC bit is the diff centre, which is Spridget so I have a choice of ratios. I use a 3.7 at Phillip Island due to the long straight and 4.2 at most other tracks.

Bob thanks for sharing some of the details of your steed. It was a thrill to watch !

Thanks Bill. If you enjoyed that one you might enjoy DVmvThP4JP4 which was filmed at Winton, a tighter track. With shorter 4.2 diff I barely touch top gear once each lap. Video is of the first half of two races.
