MG TD TF 1500 - TC rear fenders

My TC had never been apart when I bought it in the 50s. The LHS rear fender is 1" narrower than the RHS and is angled towards the inside. When I repainted the car it was impossible to mount it straight due to being narrow.
I realize these fenders were manually made, but wheelmen have guages to check their shapes and sizes. The profile of my fender is good, but its narrow.
I once asked a wheelman how this could be. His quick answer was " there wasn't enough material left on the roll of sheet metal to make a full sized fender, but he was able to make a fender rather than throw away the material."
I don't know !
In the November issue of Safety Fast page 19, there is a close up rear picture of George Phillips' new 46 or 47 TC with identical crooked and narrow LHS rear fender to my 49.
I've never noticed this on other TCs.
Was this common on TCs ?
Thanks
Charlie

I was helping Bob Figenskau years ago and the car we were working on had the same problem. you might try Abington Spares. to see if they have some or know about a new fender.

The fact that the TC was an afte the 2nd WW car and not originally designed with the export market in mind the legislation in the US obviously meant that fenders
(bumpers here in the UK) had to be an add on as the US market took off. The problem of wing size I'm sure wasn't initially an obvious problem. It may have been rectified later. I also expect that there was a wheel man allocated to each fender rather than to a particular car as industrial systems progressed. This may have resulted in a case of the "right hand not knowing what the left hand" was doing. Some of the mark historians may have a better idea.

I've never heard of this issue with a factory wing. It's possible that yours was replaced due to collision damage early in its life. Regarding the Phillips TC, I haven't seen the photo but wonder if it's an optical illusion. It doesn't seem likely that even the frugal M.G. Car Company would make a smaller wing just because they had a short piece of steel left over. TAs had narrower wings so it's possible you have one on your car. Actually they had two different widths, early and late.

Thank you for your comments. For the last 60 plus years I wondered about my wing as it didn't appear to have been replaced.
However, I guess it was probably replaced with a late TA or TB although the car had no sign of having had a smack and those wings were probably narrower.
The Phillips picture of his new 46 was a good 5" square close up with the same wing as mine.
I guess, lost to time and who cares.
