MG TD TF 1500 - TD 17744 ROLLING CHASSIS

It's Christmas and TD17744 has wheels! There is a punch list of things to tighten and a strap or two to add, but ready to move on.

Thanks to all of you for your help and support. Special thanks to Tom Lange for bionic axle shafts and Jim Pesta for shiny new 4.3 rear end. As most of you already know, it's a pretty exciting step. Now you know why I have started asking engine questions.

Well done. A garage/workshop floor to be envied. No oil or tools laying every where.

I can't tell for sure in the picture Jim, but it looks like the front bolt on the rear spring may have been inserted from the outside. If it is you may want to consider changing that. I know it's counter intuitive but once the tub is mounted to the car the bolt can only be extracted if needed from the inside. So if the head is on the outside you can only remove it by either pulling the tub or cutting the bolt.
L E D LaVerne

Thanks for the eagle eye LaVerne, but both are inserted from the inside. I remembered the positioning because when I had to drive the originals out, one of them shot out and ended up halfway into the cross member. Having said that, I welcome the scrutiny. Always a little frightening to invite scrutiny from a forum full of experts, but I think necessary to prevent critical mistakes. Not a concours car, just a reasonably original driver.

Yeah, JK, I picked up all of the tools, dead mice, etc. before I took the photo. Also, kitty litter is like gold in the shop.

Oh, I forgot to thank John James from ttypes.org for the rear spring poly bushings and nylatron pads.

Looks like you need the front rebound rubbers?

Oh how I envy you the joys which are to come!👹 I was in that position about three years ago and have been reaping the rewards by driving TF 2071 for around six months now.
I remember building my first boat and thinking when I had finished the hull that I was well on the way to getting afloat.....
Enjoy the ride!

Tom,
Absolutely right. Rebound rubbers and spacers are in the "front end" box. Thought I would wait until I got more weight on the front. It's sitting pretty high right now.
Right Chris. I have hardly been able to think about the Coachwork yet. Fortunately, there doesn't seem to be much rust, unless it is creeping around underneath the wood somewhere. You don't think I'll be on the road by spring?

Jim,

Did you have the wheels trued up??

Steve

Steve,
There doesn't appear to be anybody here in Nashville who trues up steel wheels. So, I took the wheels to a local "old school" tire shop here. They mounted the wheels, centered on the lugs, and spun them. While they were not perfect, there was only one that had noticeable run out or wobble. I used it as the spare, and the two best ones went on the front. The shop felt like they would be just fine. I won't do the final dynamic balance and alignment until all the weight is on the car and ready to drive. What do you think?
