MG TD TF 1500 - TD Body Number

Hi. I have been watching this board for a few years and have been amazed
by the knowledge and the wonderful banter between you all. I am restoring a 1950 TD. Chassis number 3490. This is the number stamped
on the left hand dump iron. There was no body number plate attached to
the car when I bought it. On the left side bottom rail of the body is the
number A60335 which I understand to be the Morris Bodyworks number.
I am trying to ascertain the MG factory body number. I think it should be
about number 3000-give or take a hundred or so. There is stamped on the right hand dump iron the number 3282. Could this be the body
number. Many thanks. Lionel Thorne.

Hi Lionel

I will let others discuss the different numbers on the dumb iron, but looking on www.tregister.org, 3490 comes up as a TD thought to be located in the UK.

According to the registry is was born on Sept 26 1950. Two years prior to my birthday and 35 days prior to my TD.

As owner of TD3453, Nice to see other 1950 TD's still alive.
The chassis number should be the number on the left side dumb iron. The body number is found stamped into the wood framing of the body on the left side door threshold UNDER the floorboard. This number should match the number on the body plate. The number stamp for the body is a 3/4" stamp in the wood.

FWIW, the body number is quite meaningless in the T-series world - it provides no information of any use, since all TD tubs were the same body type. The chassis (dumb iron) and engine numbers are the useful ones.

Some of the early TD's had their plates attached to the frame in the passenger footwell (like this pic of TD0268). When did they move to the engine bay I wonder?

Matthew.

Hi Matthew,
I have TD 0267 and my plate was removed before i purchased my car.
I saw the plate on your car at the 60th anniversary in the Dandenongs when Jim Bradley owned it.
Could you contact me by email to discuss some points of interest.

Lionel,

A warm welcome for you and your car. It's always nice to see another '50 car. Please post a pic!

BTW, mine is TD3966 from October 23 1950.

Lionel, welcome from another 1950 car TD3376. Picture is of the car as it is now and from my research is as it left the factory.

Brian Smith (1950 TD3376)

Thank you for your responses and pictures. I doubt if 3490 will compete
with those, but I will do my best! When I've finished it I will post a picture.
In the meantime could you "shine a light" on your right hand dump irons
and let me know if you find a number the same as the body number.
Many thanks. Lionel.

Hello Lionel. As Tom says above you won't find the body number on the dump (sic) dumb irons. What you will find is the chassis number. This is the individual number given by the factory to identify your car. For example I'm TD 5801. This number is stamped on RHD cars near the bottom of the passenger front triangular shaped end of the chassis. If you provide this number to The M.G. Car Club in England they will send you a photocopy of the actual log entry that shows the build date of your car & the number of the engine that was fitted to it. As you don't have a factory plate it may be worth your while to do this for both numbers, as you can then check to see if the engine number stamped on your block tallies with either chassis number.
What is strange is that you seem to have two chassis numbers, 3490 on the left, which is the correct place for a RHD car & 3282 on the right, which I can only assume is the correct place for a LHD car.. Odd!

Just had a look at the link provided by Bruce above. Chassis No TD 3490 left Abingdon with Engine No 3818 & was a LHD car exported to the States. It seems all cars either LHD or RHD had the chassis No on the left front. Is your car LHD?

What is also interesting is if you put in TD3490 in the registry it comes up with this.

http://www.tregister.org/found_chassis.php?chassis_no=TD3490®=td

So this car appears to be in the UK, so that says it may be this car.

Lionel,

Echoing the other members..welcome aboard. I have TD 0581 (born January 1950). The brass plate from the factory is on the firewall. On the older engines, the engine number is back on the flywheel cover.

Attached is an image of 581. She's in good to very good driver condition and it is absolutely great fun.
