MG TD TF 1500 - TD brake pipeing & fittings

We are soon to start on the braking system. Does anyone have a source for original parts? The banjo's we got with this car are cast aluminum (aftermarket?) and I have always seen them in brass. Also, what size are the threads for the fittings, these measure 3/8-24 and that would be 'unified' for MGA and up, correct? Thanks Jack

As far as I have seen the brass banjos are rare and if offered expensive. Moss only has alloy - also expensive. But only for the left side. I keep my additional used banjos dry and warm ;-).

Jack TD is 3/8 BSF. The flare nuts (made in China not brass) from Brake Connect are too short. Cheers

Jack, Yep, Peter is correct, 3/8 BSF or 3/8-20. And yes, 3/8-24 is 'unified' but what you probably have is reproduction parts and who knows what you might get these days. I know this has been talked about before but 'original' parts are almost like hens teeth and EBAY is a swamp for good original parts. Todd Clark many years ago put me on to a company that used to restore parts and had everything I ever needed for T series and some MGA. The company is OOPS1947@metalfan.com here in the states. I ghave never seen them advertise, do EBAY or swap meets. I just came back from Import Carlisle on Sunday and that was a total waste of time. At the most, maybe two vendors with any parts. I doubt if I will ever go to that meet again, in years past THAT was the place to get parts, not Hershey at least here on the East Coast. Frank

Hi Jack.

I recently finished rebuilding my wife's TD brake system and purchased our parts from Fedhill. Great quality and service.

Just wanted to recommend that you purchase a few extra bsf brake-line fittings (about $9.00 for 6 fittings) if you make your lines. Both the original brass/bronze (?) banjo fittings, new aluminum banjo fittings and various connectors have relatively fragile threads and we noticed some of the new brake-line fittings threaded more easily than others (and yes, we carefully cleaned ALL fittings/threads before use). We only used brake-line fittings that threaded easily.

Would also recommend that you thread the brake-line fittings into each banjo and 3-way/4-way connectors before building a line and mark their orientation if you observe a difference in how they thread into a particular banjo or connector.

A 25-foot roll of brake-line was sufficient to rebuild the TD brake system with 1 or 2 feet extra to practice your double flare skills.

Jack,

Also wanted to mention we decided to use conventional Dot 3/4 low moisture brake fluid and were able to use Permatex hydraulic thread seal/assembly lube when installing brake-line fittings. I don't know if brake-line thread seal and assembly lube is compatible with Dot 5 if some contamination occurred.

As you probably know, brake-line thread seal and assembly lube is ONLY used to (i) make initial threaded installation easier and (ii) seal fitting threads from outside dirt and moister to ensure parts can be more easily removed in the future as needed. These compounds are NOT used on the actual hydraulic sealing surfaces.
