MG TD TF 1500 - TD Car/Chassis Number

Hi, just had a question about a TD Car/Chassis number. It is my understanding this number is unique for all MG cars produced regardless of year or home/export destination?

Thanks for any help. We are tracing the history of a car and assume the Car/Chassis number is the most reliable information to use.
W. H. Troyer

Yes, you are correct - the unique chassis number is the safest number by which to identify a particular car. The chassis is stamped with this unique number, as well.

That being said, in many Western states, especially, cars were registered under the engine number, so it is not unusual to see a car registered as XPAG1234 or whatever. This is fine as long as the original engine is in place, but many were swapped out in the 60's, when a junkyard engine was cheaper than having the original rebuilt. Remember, these cars were nothing special back then, just inexpensive transportation. In that case, the registration number will no longer match the engine number, leading to all sorts of mischief...

I have copies of the Production Records, and can send you a copy of the ledger page with your car; send me the engine number and chassis number.

Thanks Tom. We are trying to trace a car that was imported from another country and document its history in both locations.

You could also try the "T Register" website and search by typing the chassis number into the Register search box to see if the car has been listed by a past owner.

WH,
The web site is www.tregister.com.
Click on Production Records.

Mathew and Steve.

Thanks. We have used the Tregister before and it shows the production records for the car, but no previous owner registry.

Would be great if you could check on the original equipment/specifications and export information. But, as I understand, that is only available for later TDs and TFs.
W. H. Troyer

Unfortunately, the specs/export information you mention for a TD is not really available anywhere. Much 50's and earlier paperwork was discarded by the factory when it expanded MGB production, as of no significance. Your car is listed in the production records as an EXLU car, EXport, Left-hand, United States.

Ownership history is hit-or-miss, anecdotal, and finding even ONE owner is luck! Search the Interweb, the NEMGT discs, and any club to which POs might have belonged.

Bud, How do I correct the email address in the TF list? Not that it's a big deal, but my email address is wrong. PJ

Paul, I'm afraid that that the TF list is kaput. Jeff Payne stopped updating it some time ago. I just keep it on the site for whatever folks can get out of it. I should put a 'caveat emptor' notation on it. Bud
