MG TD TF 1500 - TD clutch

Is it possible to install a clutch in a TD backwards? And if it is, what will the results be?

Thanks,
Rich

Yes it is.The results are you wont be able to select any gears.

...and lots of noise when you try to press the pedal down I believe

The spring hub of the disc must face toward the transmission

I am convinced the clutch is not in backwards. I have a spare flywheel and the old clutch and broken pressure plate that I played with on the bench tonight. If the clutch was backwards it would be metal to metal and no way would it go into gear. Yet there is little adjustment in the clutch that makes a difference. When pushing the clutch in it disengages at the furthest point. Still getting some grinding at times trying to get it into gear?

Wrong throwout bearing? Problem with the bearing fork, like loose on the shaft?
Steve Simmons

Steve, thanks for the ideas. Using the same throw out bearing that was in there before. It was still in really nice shape, a roller bearing. The fork fit nice and tight at install so thinking those are all good.

Other than the parts being worn, or the linkage out of adjustment, I can't think of what the problem could be. Oil or grease on the disc maybe?
Steve Simmons

nope nice and clean Steve.

Maybe it's not the clutch. Maybe it's worn synchros or some other thing causing the gears to not engage smoothly. Just guessing. Jud

Is it possible you warped the clutch plate when fiddling the gearbox back in ?.
Is it a ford box? I have seen two cases where the plate was put in backwards and the shock spring housing fitted into the flywheel bolt rebate (just) and gave the problem you have.

Hey all,

Here is an update on my clutch issues. Ray I am running the stock transmission, not the ford 5 speed.

Upon further investigation the problem was in the linkage. Maybe the pressure plate was slightly different then the original or the clutch was thicker than the original? Really not sure, but it was determined the clutch pedal was not going down far enough to fully disengage the clutch. There was really no adjustment in the linkage to fix this problem. After looking at the linkage we determined that the linkage was binding up on itself. We made a modification to the clutch link by grinding out the part that was hitting on the lever. We took out about 1/8 - 1/4 and it made all the difference in the world. Now the clutch is able to fully disengage by this small modification.

Thanks to everyone that had input and trying to help. We are back on the road with no grinding! Picture of the modification attached.

I have had to modify a few club members clutch push rods because of this problem.(overthrow on sump lever)
I cut a 30mm section out then tap the tube both sides and screw in a section of stud bar with 2 nuts. Then adjust till at mid throw the arms are about parallel.
This has been done on both original and Ford boxes so I think it is just differences in new products
