MG TD TF 1500 - TD Cowl Rubber Fasteners

Among the winter's projects for Lazarus will be the replacement of the cowl rubber. I'm hoping that there has been a consensus on the fasteners to be used to attach the cowl rubber. There are 51 threads in the archives about cowl rubber, but there's no such consensus. I'm not interested in being 'correct', just reasonable. I'm guessing that they'll be nails. How thick? What material? What sort of head? I'll be replacing the 25 year old rubber with the latest cowl rubber from Abingdon Spares. TIA. Bud

They were about 3/4-1" long, flat headed, blued brads (small nail). I don't have the weight, sorry. Perhaps someone else will be able to tell you the weight.

I used blue steel tacks. They're tapered, and don't hold real well, I'd try something else next time. They do sink into the rubber some, so don't protrude & scratch.

I used 1" long stainless steel brads purchased from the hardware store. Works well, will not rust and is not expensive. Have a good day!

From the archives. I used the stainless ones with a slightly rounded head, somewhere around 3/4" long. A dab of flat black paint and the disappear. George

Sounds like the right thing to me. Thanks, George.
Stay safe. Bud

I used bronze boat nails

This is what I settled on:

Wire nails for Hood (36) Flat #18 ¾" Blued

You may find 5/8" better depending on how firm your wood is.

These used to be common in hardware stores but I cannot seem to locate them online. Must be using the wrong search terms.

Note these are the same that hold the rubber door buffers on too (4 each).

Bruce Cunha is trying to hunt down a source for the same type of fastener that is used on the black vinyl strip in the boot area. The gimp nail is a black flat-topped nail that is 3/8 inch long, 1/16 inch thick, and has a head that is 1/8 across.

I use #16 3/4” brads. Same size as all the nails used to secure tub timbers. Brads can be countersunk so that no paint damage occurs.
