MG TD TF 1500 - TD Exhaust Downpipe
Looks like after mounting my jethot coated manifold to the car (after a long delay of many years), I note that my exhaust pipe flange on the down pipe is warped. I always wondered what that white stuff was in the crack between the pipe and manifold flanges was. Now I know :-( In any case, short of getting a complete new stainless exhaust system (although this may be a great excuse to get one), is there any source for just getting a new or used downpipe with a good flange? All suggestions appreciated. |

One more thing. If I go with a new stainless system, which is better, the Moss Tourist Trophy or the Bell? Would rather just find a new/used downpipe with a good flange though. |

I imagine you have specialised exhaust system repairers/fabricators in the States. If the pipe section is sound someone with these skills should be able to replace the flange with a new one. Graeme |

L, Is the flange actually warped or just bent? Can you put a straight edge on it ? I might be that the pipe is the culprit,, maybe it is bent which can be straighend? Might be that the nuts were not tightened enough??? Or the gasket was blown out??? Picture ????? Steve |

I have one from the TF. Free! Down pipe, muffler and tail pipe! PJ |

I forgot to ad, My 72 MGB and the 55 TF both have Falcon stainless exhaust systems on them. Nice soft sound and extremely well built. Not a high polished chrome mirror finish as some, but my cars don't set over a mirror in a show display anyway. Falcon welds their ID plates to their products, I guess because their proud of what they make and rightly so! PJ |

Paul - Are the TD and TF downpipes the same diameter? I know that from the muffler back the TF is wider. Thanks for the offer! |

Steve - Here's a picture of the mating.![]() |

Paul - Let me get some more feedback and I'll let you know. Thanks again! Can anyone confirm that the TD and TF downpipes are the same diameter? |
L Karpman |
You should be able to heat that up with a torch and pound it flat again. Any good muffler or welder with an anvil should be able to take the warp out of the flange. |

Thanks Chris. My neighbor who is helping me is a pretty good welder. He told me this AM he thinks he could do it. Worth a try. Paul - Can you hold down on to that downpipe for a day or so, until I can decide the best course of action? Also, I see I can pick up a new Bell SS system for a darn good price. I may go that route also. |
L Karpman |
Well, I've held on to it for about 5 years, is that a good answer? Grin. The whole thing is not very pretty, very rusty. The down pipe I could cut off at the muffler and make it easier to ship. Of course you could come get it! Grin Believe it or not, I haven't seen it for a while buried in the corner somewhere. I'll have to go dig it out. PJ |

A much simpler solution is to remove the studs and have it ground flat. A two minute job at your local machine shop. Don H |

Well Paul, I just ordered the last Bell Stainless system that the folks in Kalamzoo had. Wife gave OK ( as I did a lot of whining :-) Thanks so much for your kind offer, but after crawling under the car, for the first time in a year or so (bad back), and taking a good look at all the components, I knew it was time for a new system now, or in the very near future anyway. Thanks to everyone else for their input and advice. |

Best move! You'll never have to fool with it again. You'll like the stainless system. PJ |

Thanks Paul. I had originally planned to do this some years ago when I had the spare manifold jet hot coated, but it fell through the cracks. The Bell system will arrive next week. Any tips on the install? Do I attach the downpipe first, then....., or another way? Never replaced an entire system before. Any info from one that's done it will be appreciated. |

I installed the down pipe first and hooked up the transmission bracket next, but just snug up the manifold flange bolts before just snugging up the transmission bracket, then tighten up the manifold tri flange, trans bracket, then install the muffler and tail pipe. After you run it and all gets hot, let it cool and check all bolts again. I personally do not use a double gasket on a new system. Two gaskets are more prone to burn through than one. PJ |

Thanks Paul. I'm wondering is you and others used any exhaust sealant like Permatex Muffler & Tailpipe Sealer on the pipe joints (not addressing the manifold or the flange gaskets, just the pipes). |

"I'm wondering if you and others used any exhaust sealant like Permatex Muffler & Tailpipe Sealer on the pipe joints (not addressing the manifold or the flange gaskets, just the pipes). ) on the SS system. Anyone? |

I have never used any. Bud |
