MG TD TF 1500 - TD fan bolts

Hey all. can anyone I.D. the four fan bolts on a TD? Moss says they are worth $7.00 each. What is so special? Tom
Thomas McNamara

First item on Dave DuBois' list:
http://www.ttalk.info/engine_fasteners.htm . Don't over-tighten them. They're a pain to replace. Especially removing the broken thread. Bud
Bud Krueger

The pitch of the thread...you ain't gonna find em at your local True Value Hardware...or the closest Fastenal either.
MG LaVerne

They are custom made and likely not used in anything else on earth. It would be difficult if not impossible to find any 5mm, .75 pitch thread that long anywhere. Yes, I have also proven they break off easily. George
George Butz

I will second the breaking point. If you do get them used don't torque them to what the book says. they will break right off.
Tom Maine

If you want to use something that is a little more common and less apt to snap, tap out the holes in the water pump pulley and use 6 X 1mm bolts. Cheers - Dave
David DuBois

Hmmmm ... $28 for 4 bolts + shipping. You're half-way to an electric 12" fan.

Personally, I'd never go back to the 'ole hand-chopper.

Did you try Roger Furneaux (Mad Metrix)? http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/pdf/madmetrics.pdf. He shows the XA038 fan blade bolt for £0.25.

I've bought stuff from him before - excellent quality.

Yes, they are special: 5 x .75 mm French Standard Metric which does not match the ISO or Fine Metric Standards of today. A legacy from the Hotchkiss Machine Gun Factory that William Morris bought in the 1920's to manufacture his engines and transmissions.
What makes it even more special is that it has a British standard head.
(1/8 W or 3/16 BSF ?)

All the engine bolts and nuts are French Standard Metric but with Whitworth Heads, 1/4 BSF head on 6 x 1.0 mm, 5/16 on 8 x 1.0 mm, etc.

Thomas,

Not only are the replacement bolts expensive they do not have the original heads on them. Your better off tapping them out like Dave D. suggested.

But you can get them with the correct heads
The so called "Mad Metric" Bolts
