MG TD TF 1500 - TD Footrest to Floor D Captive Nuts

The D captive nut shown in the attached pic is original & I need to order 4 for my TD. As FTFU has a fixings sale on this weekend, now seems like the time to buy. The problem is Doug has both 1/4" BSF & 5/16" BSF & is unsure what was originally fitted to the TD. Can anyone confirm the correct size? The pic is from Matthew Majilton. Cheers

In case of any confusion I think Peter means the Toe-board, not the passenger foot rest?

Matthew.
M Magilton

Correct Matthew. The black painted sheet metal bit below the bulkhead & above the floor, not the thing that the passenger puts their feet on. Cheers

I just checked mine and they are 1/4".

So that's where those D shaped things go. I learn something every time I visit this site.

Hmmm mine are spotted to the toe board.

I have a few in a box that came with the car (or should I say the car that came in boxes). Perhaps they are replacements for stripped or missing welded on ones. I'll check.

That's correct Bill. Though I've never seen one I believe they have a flange or lip which sits on top of the toe board. What you see in the pic, the D shaped cage, protrudes below. The lip is spot welded to the toe board. My replacement toe board has been fabricated without them. As Matthew pointed out the mention of footrest in my title is incorrect.

Tim can you confirm that yours are also 1/4" BSF like those on David's car or do you just have the cages without the nuts? (The 4 square cages on the bottom of the bulkhead that secure the top of the toe board are 5/16" BSF & so are the ones that secure the rear fender). Cheers

Peter, I just checked and the captive nuts on the toe board are 1/4" BSF on my car.

Mine are 1/4" as well Peter

I think these are swedged over. Not sure how you could spot weld something heavy like these against the light steel of the toeboard, but I am only saying this from memory.

None the less they are permanently attached.
Christopher Couper

Thanks guys. I'll order 4 @ 1/4" BSF. Chris I'd planned to cut out the D shape in the toe board, drill a couple of holes in the lip of the captive D & zap it with my MIG. I guess the shank, excluding the head, would be about an 1", maybe 1 1/4"? Cheers

I made my D nuts with flat stock and a 1/4" BSF tap. I used a file and a vise to get the flat on the D. I brazed them in place. Looks stock.

Peter,

The originals are definitely swaged over. It can be done with a heavy washer and a bolt and then tightening the assembly or by starting the swaging with a punch and then finishing it in a bench vice. Normally they are close to the edge so the part will fit in the vice.
The larger 5/16" are used along the top edge of a TC firewall for toe board fitment. I managed to get the firewall in the vice to fit these to my TC.

Max I and Chris C are right re the correct swayed over edges.

I purchased ,an excellent as exactly per original Toeboard(Rhd) ,from Kilmartins, Australia last year. Briliant and well priced.
No financial association.

I don't doubt they were originally swaged & I'll give your method a go Max. Hopefully they'll arrive with the correct nuts & bolts as well David. Whatever method I use won't be seen just as long as they end up roughly in the right place. Agree Rob about the quality & pricing of Kilmartin's sheet metal. I'll be ordering one of their passenger footrests shortly as I was pretty impressed with the one I saw recently. The toe board I made fits perfectly, it just needs the D nuts. Thanks & cheers

Rob,
I leant them my TF and TC toe boards as templates. They do a very good job however the 1/4" they supply as a loose item are too large on the outside diameter. However they may have fixed that problem now.

Re-posting to correct a misconception of mine. For some reason up until a few moments ago, I had it in my head that the 'D' nut pictured in the post at the start of this thread was one of four captive nuts, consisting of a 'D' nut inside a 'D' captive housing & that is what I was seeing in the pic above. I now realize that this is NOT the case. I'm about to fit the 1/4" BSF nuts from FTFU to my home made toe board using the technique Max suggested. The pic came from Matthew Magilton. Cheers
