MG TD TF 1500 - TD for $600 ?

This TD is on ebay right now ... http://www.ebay.com/itm/322053017428?rmvSB=true

Not quite sure what it is. But for $600 (probably more by the time the auction closes) there might be enough to make something out of it; but aside from the TD chassis, there's a mish-mash of Triumph, "A" series and what appears to be a Vanguard engine block.

The rear axle is Vanguard/TR3, and the chrome valve cover (barely showing) is too narrow to be an XPAG. Signs that the whole drive train is probably TR3 or TR4.

Most importantly however, is that the critical stuff seems to be there. For someone brave enough, it could probably be made into something.

Actually, a TR3/TR4 conversion is quite good, but requires significant improvements to the cooling system. Below is a pic of a recent conversion near here.

Good value if it was in Aus.

A different - yellow - TD comes up with that link, also, I think, with a TR engine.

Gauges are TR3. Used to have a set in my TD when I bought it. Same as later TD tach and speedo, but black face.

I see a Late model MGB motor in the parts. Not sure of the block behind it.

The block in the background is almost certainly a Vauxhall engine block which of course, was the basis of the TR3 and TR4 engines

The timing chain cavity on the front, is the give-away.

Whilst the TR3/TR4 engine made a good swap, the oil filter on the left side, was positioned such that the engine had to be mounted about an inch further back that desired, so as to clear the frame rail. Unfortunately that caused the engine to impinge on the edge of the tub below the battery case, and in the installation below, the scuttle sadly, was cut away to allow the engine to fit. Pix available on request.

In this case, I reckon that the cutting may have weakened the entire tub, and at the time, I questioned the wisdom of making such a drastic modification. Surly, some means could have been found to circumvent this radical surgery.

If indeed this TD is fitted with a Triumph engine, I would love to know how it was mounted to accommodate the oil filter.

The eBay ad makes no mention of the power train, nor are there any pictures. Just wonder what surprises await the successful bidder.

The engine in the foreground appears to be a B engine with air pump holes in the head and looks like a pair of HIF carbs on the ground. I'd say around a 72/73. Take a brave sole to carry that pile home. PJ

Quite a few items missing, but quite a few there. Frame is quite bent, at least up by the front fender/radiator (5th pic, with magnification). So one engine in the car (same pic), and one engine on the ground?

The basis for the TR engine was the Standard Vanguard ,also used for the Ferguson tractor.. Vauxhall was GmM

Thanks Neville.

In my dotage, I had intended to say it was a Standard Vanguard all along. I got it mixed up with the Lotus engine which did indeed, use the Vauxhall engine block. I should have known better, having owned both a TR3 and a TR4.
