MG TD TF 1500 - TD front brake back plate orientation

Hi all,
I'm reinstalling the front brake backing plates and realize there could be 2 different 180° orientations. Is there a difference? There is a small 1/4" unused hole between two of the 4 mounting holes. This could either go towards the front of the car or the back, on either side. Is there a difference?
Thanks for any comments.

I just went through the same thing. The hole for the wheel cylinder has to be high enough for the bleed screw housing to fit (otherwise interference from the steering arm). Try fitting each back plate to the right or left side and you will see which plate positions the wheel cylinder higher. That is the correct back plate for that side.

David,

Once you figure out which side of the car the back plates go on to avoid fouling the steering arms, there is indeed two orientations of that little hole. It does not matter which way it is oriented. The hole was either a tooling hole, or for another car in the BMC line up.

Warmly,

Gents,

If I remember correctly, once the dirt and crud are removed the part number ending in R or L is stamped into the interior of the backing plate. Scratched my head for a while then got out a bright light. Stampings are not too deep and hard for old eyes to see.

Hi All!
Thanks to all who responded with help. To sum up:
The backing plates are indeed stamped with a number followed by RH and LH, so it is no problem to get the correct plate on the the correct side. I then decided to locate the plates with this number at the top where it is right side up and readable. This puts the afore mentioned empty 1/4" hole towards the front of the car on both sides! Thanks again for the help!

Numbers for RIGHT plate

I had the right and left side on correct. But I had the "extra" hole to the back. This caused my shoes to lock up the wheel a bit.

So RIGHT ( RH ) - LEFT ( LH ) - and small hole to front on both sides.
