MG TD TF 1500 - TD Gas Tank
What is the proper way to clean a TD gas tank with the two baffels in it. |

If it needs paint...take it to a radiator shop and have them "boil" it out for you. I have a TC here now that I just drained 40 year old fuel out of...nasty... put two gallons of lacquer thinner in it. Ran the pump till I filled the lines with clear liquid and then put another 10 gallons of gas in the tank. I rock the car a couple of times a day. When we get some new fuel hoses ( a few weeks) I'll pump the tank dry and put some fresh fuel in it. This may or may not work if the tank is corroded. If it is the then the radiator shop can get the job done...after which I would coat the inside. |

My son owns a radiator shop on the East Coast and until the EPA got so strict, he had a hot caustic tank in his shop and did quite a few antique car gas tanks. After boiling them out and rinsing them, he would, and this might sound going off the deep end, put a bag of marbles in the tank with some water and with a helper, shake the tank at all angles to loosen anything left in there, surprisingly, there would be loose flaky material left in some of the tanks. He doesn't do gas tanks anymore. Removed the hot tank as the cost of disposing of the caustic chemicals became extremely expensive. PJ |

Look at the archives there was a long discussion a year or two past and some innovative techniques to facilitate the process with some great results, cleaning was succesfully followed with coating inner tank and baffles |

I cleaned the inside of my 1932 MG M Type tank with hot caustic soda but be careful it's nasty stuff. Also will not work if it cools. However I made two big mistakes. I filled the tank with a handfull of spring washers and water and gave it a good shake to loosen any scale. This worked a treat but I didn't know how to dry the inside and next day it was rusty again! This rust was vey fine and clogged the fuel filter. I then decided to use "slosh tank sealant" and screwed a scrap union into the outlet to stop the sealant leaking whilst I sloshed it around. When the sealant had set the union was locked solid - so much so I had to drill it out and retap. Keep the stuff away from any threads! Jan T |

1cup salt per gallon of vinegar. No nasty chemicals..takes it to bare metal. Regards, Tom |

I just reactivated a similar thread. I used the system sold by POR-15. Their cleaner did a great job and the coating was more than adequate, IMHO. Bud |

I attached my TD tank to an electric concrete mixer via a jig so it would rotate. I then put a jar full of whitworth square 1/4" nuts in and over o few days it cleaned it up just great. Like Jan said it sure loosened up some muck. I then washed it out a number of times before using the POR treatment. Very Happy with the results. Rob. |

Very glad to hear you used period correct whitworth nuts to clean your gas tank, Rob... anything else would cause consternation on this forum :) |
