MG TD TF 1500 - TD Gearbox

Hello together,
i have a problem with my gearbox from the TD. Last Saturday after 60 km driving I could drive only in the third Gear. On Sunday it was in the beginning from the ride everything ok, but after a time the fourth gear jumpt out when I withdraw the gaspedal.
Does anybody know a garage in Germany or UK repair the TD-Gearbox.

Thanks
Georg

Georg,
I have repaired my old gearbox and have it here as a spare. There is a DVD available which you could borrow. Volker Hermann in Essen is the Gearbox Guru around here but he is not cheap.

Georg,

If you can get top off the gearbox [remove the carpet & Gearbox cover to expose it] See if the little square bolts are all there.
They should be wire locked in place.
See the pic in the workshop Manual.
Could be one or more have worked loose or dropped out. Watch out for the 3 springs in the GB cove top.

Just a thought

Rod's comment is well worth investigating.

I had rebuilt the GB on one of my Morris Minors back around 1965 and was driving to Florida. I pulled into a gas station and overshot the pump. I put the car in reverse and it would not come out.
Turned out that one of these little screws loosened and locked the fork into reverse.

Rod,
I had opend the gearbox. All little square bolts are fast and safed.

Hi Georg,
check that the nut on the rear drive flange is tight.
This can cause all sorts of problems.

Ray,

can you tell me the number from the picture fromthe rear drive flange?

Sorry for my bad english.

Georg

Georg, it's #113. It's up inside of the flange, #111. Bud

Hi Georg,
your English is far superior to my German. Bud has answered your query.

Ray, Bud,
i could turn the nut almost a quarter of a turn.
So i will tomorrow reassemble and test it.

A nice Weekend

Glad everything inside was tight Georg,

Hope the Big nut is your problem and an easy cheap fix.
This is a castellated nut - Shouldn't there be a split pin in there? Can't say I have looked at mine is a long time. Does anyone know what the torque is for the nut?

Rod.

Yesterday a wonderful sunny day, TD25681 runs well, it was a straight road, i withdraw the gaspedal and the fourth gear jumpt out. So what a shi..

Georg

@ Rod, the split pin was in there.
Georg Becker

Georg,

I can only think there may be a bearing issue inside the box with sufficient play to allow the overrun pressure to kick the gear out of its detent.

Neil Cairns has a really good write up on how to overhaul a gearbox for a Y type. Which is very much the same as on our TD's It may help you and give you something to do over the winter :)

When you get to the bottom of the page just follow the link to the next.

I have not experienced this on my car so am of little help I am afraid. I am sure others with more knowledge will chime in here and assist.

Good luck
