MG TD TF 1500 - TD gearbox

First gear alignment ?? What would cause this? PJ

PJ Jennings

I guess no one knows why first gear is off center?

PJ,

We need more information, what is preventing the gear from moving into place?

Is the first sliding gear engaged with the balls on the inner hub, ie clicked in to place? Are there any shims between the mainshaft circlip and the end of the inner hub? What is the history of this gearbox- was it having problems, and if so what? George

George, this is not my gearbox, but trying to find out what might be causing this issue for him. I'll have to ask him more questions as he lives too far away to see it myself, especially with the virus regulations. PJ

George,

The 1st gear does not have any interlocks, it is positioned only by the 1st/2nd gear fork. This is why I asked PJ what is preventing the 1st gear from moving further. The shim next to the mainshaft circlip is used to adjust the clearance for the second gear synchro cone. The six balls in the sliding hub are used only to hold the 1st/2nd assembly in neutral.

I also have this problem with the first gear not fully meshing it actually good to know others may have this problem I am beginning to think its a problem with all TD/TF first gear I have all the correct parts in place the selector fork is only slightly worn I have posted the measurement for the first gear selector shaft indent to find out if all TD measure the same. my measurement is .625inch

I need another ,070inch further in to get full engagement, If i cant get to the bottom of this I am going to shift the indent along the selector shaft to fully engage. If there is any problems from this move it will show up before i fit g/box back , but i cant see any at the moment

PJ & TJ, my problem was that 2nd gear would not fully engage. I ended up relocating the selector fork on the selector shaft. You might want to take a look at this thread: https://mg-cars.org.uk/cgi-bin/or17?runprog=mgbbs&access=&mode=archiveth&subject=8&subjectar=8&thread=2020030301255812041

Search " Pinion Gear Speedometer Drive

We tapped and plugged the existing hole and drilled a new locating hole. Although this did not address the underlying problem, it eliminated the symptom of the transmission jumping out of 2nd when not under load.

JK Thanks for you reply I find it most interesting I also read your link , the measurements i get is distance from the center of the gear-lever slot to 2nd gear indent 2.875inch, 2nd gear to neutral .425inch, neutral to first gear .625inch. These are a little iffy as its hard to measure accurately. these are probably a bit late but you may have them written down somewhere. I find your fix of second gear interesting. it sort of emphasizes the manufacturing standards in the 50,s. When my oil pump was recond the slave gear (a new one )would not fit in the pump body i found it to be .005inch too large. so the gear was machined down to give the correct side clearance. The driven gear fitted perfectly. I am going to take your lead and doctor the first gear alignment. The first gear on the lay-shaft has worn to a .005inch taper because of the out of align fit. this will probably cause first to come out of mesh on either decelerate or accelerate . This I don't know as the TD was in many pieces when i bought it and had been in a shed for 20 years. thanks Saltiga

Found problem with first gear. the center main bearing has the guard plate and spring plate missing . must have been left out on a previous reconditioning Saltiga
