MG TD TF 1500 - TD generator

Just got a email from Moss Motors. The positive ground generator I have had on order for my '51 TD since December 15 has still not been shipped and they don't seem to know when they will have one. Any ideas where I might find one before my car gets any older? Thanks

Bob, you know that any generator can be positive or negative ground? Hope you are looking for a neg ground generator, too. It just takes a flash to switch from one ground to the other. Why not get it rebuilt? If original the case will have a date code of when the dynamo made, which will be just several weeks prior to when your car was made. Matching numbers! A new or rebuilt one may have any date on there.

I rebuilt my generator/dynamo myself using the parts from Moss. it wasn't a difficult job. I did not replace the magnets. Dave DuBois has a simple method for changing the polarity of the generator. http://userwebs.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/Other_Subjects/Electrical/General/Polarity_Change.pdf I'm sure guys like Len Fanelli and FTFU could do a more professional job than I did and if you want it done exactly right you probably should check them out. But my "money pit" keeps getting deeper and deeper.

Why not fit an alternator from the Octagon Club. Identical to the dynamo, positive and negative earth and a tacho drive connection. Cheaper than a replacement dynamo.

What's wrong with it? 99% of the time, all you need are new brushes and maybe a new bushing. It's about $12 worth of parts and takes 10 minutes to install.

Agree with Steve "99% of the time, all you need are new brushes and maybe a new bushing."
The dynamo for the TC through the early MGB are only a few (small steps) from ones built by Boy Scouts for electric merit badges. :-)

Good thread, I have a couple of Generators that need to be rebuilt at some point. Nice to have the resources available.
S Griffin

FromtheFrameup.com has a few for exchange. Do not know the cost. I traded him a few to rebuild mine.

Bob does not say why he had ordered a new dynamo. If it is just not charging, and not bad bearings or a snapped armature or something, first thing to always try is re-flashing it.

I gave up on the generator I had. The field coils had 18 ohms instead of the 6-8 in the specs. The local shop said the armature was bad and he thought a bearing was bad or a spacer was missing. After ordering the replacement from Moss on December 15, I just got an email saying it was shipped. I guess I have to move the fan and pulley over from the old unit. After that I hope it drops in and works. Fingers crossed!
