MG TD TF 1500 - TD Glovebox Dimensions
As I plan on making one from the heap of surplus fibreboard I've used to make the front & rear quarter upholstered panels, does anybody have the plans, patterns or dimensions of a TD glovebox? I've checked the archive but there's nothing on this. I know I can buy one but I'd rather make it to fit my car perfectly as I've remade both the dash & the sub dash in ply, along with everything else originally made from plywood. Any other info or pics on the original method of assembly, finish etc would be appreciated. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Peter, around the glovebox is a tremendous amount of freespace. I used some cardboad and staples to make a model that uses maximum of that freespace and the result is a twice/tripple as big glovebox. I made the final model out of 1mm aluminum sheets that i riveted. Inside coated with dark red felt. Huib |

Thanks Huib. I'd like to keep the dimensions as close to original as possible. Does anyone have an original glovebox lying around that they could measure &/or take some pics of? I have the original door/lid which gives me something to go on. The actual depth, the detail of the oblong shape @ the bottom & the method of construction is anyone's guess. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Hi Peter, I meant to get these pics taken for you a couple of days ago, but life got in the way. Sorry for the delay. I hope that these help. Kirk ![]() |

I tried to show that this is the circumference with that last pic. The next one will show the circumference measurement on the tape.

It was hard to get accurate measurements because the box is somewhat misshapen. But, I think you'll be able to get an idea anyway. I hadn't noticed any green overspray on my car until taking the pics of this glovebox. All other evidence points to my car always being black body/red interior. So, this is just one more mystery. Let me know if you need any more photos/measurements. Kirk |

Kirk: Very nice post. I will see if I can utilize some of this on the TD site with credit coming your way. |

Thanks Chris, that would be great. |

Thank you Kirk. I appreciate the time you've taken. Hopefully I can now make paper templates. It seems I only need two. The top, bottom & sides are one piece & the end is the other? I assume the two cutouts are for the hinges & I guess the join is @ the top? There are two strange "perforated" circles in the end that don't seem to have a purpose. Any thoughts? Some radios were fitted into the glovebox way back when. Perhaps they were provision for wiring? The box is assembled with what looks like bifurcated steel (now rusted) rivets. Have these been opened out inside the box & hammered into the board? The detail suggesting this approach is just visible in pic 3. The method of fixing the box to the subdash, the location of the fixings & the flocking finish detail are my only outstanding queries. I did find one other pic in the archive. If you ever find yourself in Oz Kirk I'll buy you a beer! Thanks mate. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

I am pretty sure the radio was too big and also hot to fit into the glovebox and it was removed prior. That's what those two strange L brackets are for. I would guess it applies to another car or else the though giving you a few holes you could punch out is better than trying to drill that stuff, which won't happen. It has to be punched. |

Thanks Peter, I'll try to get you a few more answers. Here is the box as it would sit (flush with the front edge) of the inner dash. ![]() |

Great stuff Kirk. Chris I was just looking through Green on another matter & came across pages 146/147. Optional HMV radio in glovebox! |

There are a total of six perforations. The two 1 1/2" diameter holes in the back. The two 2 3/4" X 1/4" rectangles on the top. And the two 3/4" diameter holes on the right side as you are facing the dash. There are only two pieces used in the construction. The fiber board appears to be about 1/8" thick. The outside is smooth and the inside seems to have a fairly fine texture to it. There doesn't seem to be any particular grain or pattern to it, just kind of a medium sandpaper type of feel. You are correct that it is riveted together with the heads on the outside. If I recall correctly, and as the pics seem to show, it was just tacked to the inner dash. ![]() |

I'll let others with more knowledge comment on the purpose of the perforations. I would have guessed radio for some of them but the number, location and size is certainly one more puzzle. Kirk |
