MG TD TF 1500 - TD Glovebox Jig

After making a TD glovebox by hand I found myself then making a couple more for two other members of the MGRA here in Sydney. My first effort was more than acceptable but not without its faults. As I was swapping the next two for original tools & parts I wanted to produce a first rate job. Hence the jig.

Made of shutter ply with the face & base screwed together, the opening jigsawed (based on templates taken from each car's sub dash) then separated & assembled using 6 @ 2" x 3/4" pieces of ply. Each template (from a 1949, a 1951 & a 1953 TD) were near enough to identical with the slight differences no doubt just due to marking out.

A light art cardboard template was then used to cut out the fibreboard to the correct length & width, the sawtoothing cut (to secure the base) & the board was gently bent into an oval using a water spray to encourage the board to bend. It was then glued & joined using 6 closed rivets prior to offering it into the jig. Each of the corner bends were then sprayed inside & out to soften the board & facilitate easier insertion. The base of the ears were again wet & then gently bent down onto a ply former & a brick placed on top until the folds were dry. The ply was removed, the fibreboad end of the box inserted & glued using exterior grade PVA.

Allowing time to dry the box was then painted with a diluted PVA solution to seal it followed by a spray with contact adhesive from a rattle can & then flocked in the original brown. The jig & part of the process is shown in the following pics. The jig took some time to make but does produce a professional result. Hope you find this useful. Cheers
