MG TD TF 1500 - TD Nitty Details
As I am in the middle of sub assemblies to my tub: What is the correct hardware for the four tool box lid mounting holes? What are the screws and how many for the glove box to the sub panel? Is there a ready source for these? |
W. A. Chasser Jr |
Bill, check out the thread Dashboard & Glovebox Trim in the archive. I used 1/2" brass CS slot head 3# wood screws & placed them adjacent to the holes for the screws in the opening trim. I had planned on using just 4 at the top, one in the centre on each side & 5 across the bottom but using the five at the top, matching the adjacent trim screws, was both more secure & aesthetically pleasing. The brass looks good against the brown flocking so I would be surprised if they went to the trouble of chrome plating these 12 screws originally. The trim (2#) & hinge (3#) screws were however originally chrome plated. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Here is an image I copied from the archives several years ago. I believe the picture is a TF but a TD may be different. The tool box lid is held by 4 small Phillips head sheet metal screws.

They appear identical to those on my TD JR. |

TF's had slotted screws. I am surprised that Phillips would be used on a TD. Matthew. |

So the tool box is a "sheetmetal" and not a machine screw? Peter can you contact me. I want to chat with you regarding your glove boxes. I bought a Moss replacement but the flocking is not correct as per my original. But my original, I don't think I can salvage. |

Sheet metal definitely not machined. You have me worried now Matthew. I have the four screws in a bag somewhere & could have sworn they were Phillips. You have mail Bill. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

My 55 TF has small round head Phillips also holding the tool box lids down, as in JRs picture. Strange as I don't think the lid has ever been off of this car. But if they get slotted ones, I'll have to start looking. PJ |

I have removed them from two different TD's and they were both slotted. |
Rich (TD 3983) Taylor |
Rich, but were they different on the late TFs? PJ |

TF 1955 - phillips head ( originality not guaranteed). Dave |

Awful lot of Phillip screws popping up on these TFs! Wonder if there was a cut off date for the slotted screws? Matthews a pretty good authority on TFs and he says slotted on TFs, Reason I asked abut the cut off date. PJ |

This may be another case where the factory used whatever was available like so many other small insignificant differences we find. Production Rate Ruled! |

TF 8985 (Jan 55) has phillips |

I think its whatever they had. My car has slotted too and I have seen both slotted and Phillips on TD's and TFs. Mine are not sheet metal but machine screws (2BA?). |
Christopher Couper |
Chris, Mine are smaller, more like 4BA but machine screws TF 8986 |

Jan 1955 TF1500 8958 has 4 Phillip sheet metal screws. Cheers John |
