MG TD TF 1500 - TD Petrol Tank
Hi, I have problems with pinholes in my fuel tank after sandblasting. Have any of you Aussie members happen to have a spare one you are willing to part with. As I had already sealed it before sandblasting the outside I can envisage problems in repairing it. If not I might have to cut the bottom out of it and do a repair. Regards Rob. |

If the leaks are only localized and you are not aiming for a concours repair you seal the back, bottom and sides of a TD tank using POR15 and and fiberglass cloth on the outside. The POR16 company actually recommends this over internal sealing for tanks that have internal baffles or complicated piping. Clean the area to be sealed to bare metal, paint on a coat of POR15 the press the cloth into the wet POR15, then paint on another coat or two. |

Rob, My petrol tank was pretty old and full of rust. I cut out in the back three 100mm holes with a hole saw. one hole for each compartment for there are three compartments. I cleaned it out of rats droppings, old paper and rags which the rats had carted into the tank. I then took it to Smith's Radiators at St. Peters in Sydney where they repaired it cleaned it and brazed three square patches back over the holes. You will not see the patches for they are up against the rear of the tub. The cost was $500. Not cheap but at least I now have a good tank. John...Sydney |

I had exactly the same problem after blasting. A local radiator repair company sorted mine by tapping down the porus section and floating solder over it. After dressing back the solder and painting it is perfect. The cost was about £30 but would have been more if the tank hadn't been bead blasted - leaks were easy to find and the solder could stick to the clean steel. Jan T |

Luckily a chap I have bought some other bits off had a spare one and I purchased it today. It seems in a lot better condition than mine but we will soon find that out with closer inspection. Jan. A friend of mine just repaired his by that method and is very happy with it. No more leaks. Thanks fellows for your comments, good advice much appreciated. Rob. |

I would have someone fix the pinholes by welding or soldering then pressure test it then just seal it again... |
