MG TD TF 1500 - TD Rear Differential Stencil

Anyone know where I can get a “TD” stencil for for my rear differental. Mine was only partially visible after cleaning and I am not happy with my effort to reproduce it. Thanks.

Yeah Bill I have one. I used it to make a cutout mask and painted mine white. And before anyone comments I do know that the brake line clip is installed upside down. It's on my to do list. And I also know that the MGA mushroom isn't original, but I can live with that. I have a template that I'll have to save as a jpeg so I can post it here. I'll also email it to you. Cheers

Excuse my ignorance. What's meant by a "stencil" with regards to a diff. please?
JK Mazgaj

No ignorance---
Some people know and some don't that's all
A stencil is a piece of paper / cardboard / tin or whatever with a cutout to paint through-
In this case it will have the letters TD cut out of it so that it can be held against the diff housing and the letters TD can be spraypainted through the cutout letters onto the housing

Stencil on TF1414

Frank Cronin

A cardboard cutout that enables an image to be spray painted onto a surface. That's my definition anyway. If you have a look Jan at the pic of my diff you can imagine how it was placed there. Banksy has turned the use of stencils into an art form. CC has images on his website of original stenciled TD and TF diffs. If you'd like a copy of the TD stencil that I used let me know and I'll email you one. You just need to fiddle with it slightly to ensure it's the correct size, print it and then cut it out. I used some manila folder cardboard. Had the rigidity and the flexibility to produce a satisfying result. Pretty simple task really. Adds another nice original detail. It can be seen from behind when you're tootling down the road. Cheers

I think we had this question answered some time back, but about what time did MG start putting the stencil on the diff? I thought it was close to the time the TF was coming out and it was used to identify the TD from the TF diff?
Bruce Cunha

Were the TD and the TF on the production line at the same time? Perhaps, but this could have only been a matter of days surely? But a more logical reason would have been to differentiate it from other marques. I understand that one of the Wolseley’s being built on the same line at the same time as the TD had a ratio of 4.8 and apart from a slightly wider track, the rear end was identical to the TD, whose ratio was 5.125:1. My TD MKII did not have a stencil of the model (TD or TF) but it did have one of the axle ratio. On my car it was 8/39 or 4.875:1.

John Masters

I forgot if it was a mixture of Y's and TD's or something else. Anyway not all differentials were marked. You can see factory pictures of them stacked where they were not marked and some where they were.

The thought was that they received shipments of differentials in batches and had to know which one (ratio) went into which cars.

Thank you Peter and Frank. Never realized that stencils had been used. After over 50 years of MGs never seen one before. Alwayssomething new.
JK Mazgaj

It was actually Chris who put me onto them by strolling through his gallery of barn finds. Cheers
