MG TD TF 1500 - TD - removing bulkhead

Hi All,

I am removing the bulkhead in my TD to gain access to replace the engine rear core plug. So far I have removed the floor boards, the transmission cover, the accelerator linkage and all the bolts secuing the bulkhead. The bulkhead is loose, but will not come out as it is fouling against the brake pedal (right hand drive model). Does anyone know whether it is possible to remove the bulkhead without also removing the pedals (I have removed these before and recall it was a dreadful fiddle). Thanks, Matt.
Matt Davis

It should just fiddle past the pedals. I have recently done a friends, I have cut it into 3 sections and fitted tapped plates to reassemble. Now the centre section is removable to access the rear core plug in future.
I did mine 40 years ago.

Thanks Ray. No amount of fiddling around would get the plate out. What I have done is removed the circlip from the pedal shaft which has allowed me to move the pedals sideways by about an eighth of an inch, which is just enough to enable me to manipulate the plate into the positon shown on the photo. I can now see the core plug, so presumably I will be able to replace it without fully removing the bulkhead plate. The core plug does not look too bad, but it is leaking at the base. I'm going to replace it with a brass one. you need to be a contortionist to work on these cars!

Never had that before and have been involved with quite a few T Types. Had them out of the middle 3 cars.
You also have me confused, you say TD but I see a TF dashboard brace fastened to the firewall?

Matt, my rear core plug was weeping for years. I covered it JB Weld back then and haven't touched it since! It's bone dry.
Save yourself the pain and try this if you haven't!

Could have saved yourself a lot of grief by just cutting a hole with a hole saw directly opposite the "welsh plug". Easy enough to install a plate to cover the hole, you will then have the facility to repeat the process, smile.
